Nvidia unveils GTX 1060: Faster than a GTX 980 for $250!

"What's the catch?" comes to mind if that is true :p

When the 970 was pre-release, it looked amazing on paper and at a reasonable price point, but then people only later found out the spec was mis-advertised. Sure it wasn't full blown lying, but it was definitely withheld the truth.

Nvidia always price their product above AMD even at the same tier...so when price is attractive, you can help but think "OK, so what corners they have cut this time?"

Looking at the new pricing approach of the 1070 and 1080, people are probably delusional to think they would get a card that out-performance the 980 at this kind of price.

I actually missed it as it wasn't on the top of the page at all (surprisingly) and I didn't realise that there'd been a 'speculation' thread for several days now :(

There's no real catch, Nvidia is now going to be 2nd to the market for this segment so they have to offset that by offering a better deal - timing is everything in business. As for corners cut, I think you can definitely see that the FE 1060 is looking pretty shabby in terms of component quality for shroud, and with 4+1 phase & 6gb, it's quite disappointing and nothing premium about it - it's going to be alright as a card but will mostly ride on Nvidia's brand than its own strength so much.

By premium you mean extra power phases and custom PCB, things that are just marketing tools, and already shown as pointless on 1070s and 1080s?

The 1060 will be so efficient a single 90mm fan would be premium enough. :o

Unless we end up with extreme price gouging, it's going to be roughly the same cost as an 8GB 480, with hopefully better performance (as they say it's 15% faster), as well as much lower power consumption (not that many people here mind about that though haha).

It'll be as much 'alright as a card' and the 8GB 480. 6GB is still plenty of vram!

6gb is plenty until you need more. :) It's a question of what you value ultimately, I'm looking at 1060 vs 480 (because I am going to buy one of either) and the only plus I can see for the 1060 is lower TDP, which is rather meaningless for me, and that Nvidia has better partners and will likely keep better resell value.

High quality components are a waste of money for this tier of card at its performance/power level.

Late to market by a week or 2 is meaningless.
6gb is really the perfect amount for this rage of cards, that is 3X what the default 960 model had.

The number of phases is really irrelevant here because the power consumption is going to be so low. The same applies to the fan, there is going to be so much less heat given off much smaller coolers are needed. Component quality at this level of card is also meaningless.

So the defence for some AMD fans is going to be 6GB isn't enough, well that is a bit of a change from 4GB is plenty from just a few short months ago.:p

So true:D

4GB on a Halo product no less to 6Gb on budget card.

Don't worry when people are looking at the sub £200 AIB RX480 4GB cards,I am sure people will say but you can spent X amount extra and get 50% MOAR VRAM if you buy a GTX1060 and save a £100 a year in leccy!! :p:D

Thats quite a decent price for now. However I can remember when my GTX460 ASUS was £140 many moons ago.

What will be Nvidia guys excuse for the only competitive price wise to the RX480 card being 3GB and how that is suddenly enough?

The reality is, 4GB is enough, 8GB is future proof, and the RX480 will both be cheaper, more widely available and easily beat the 1060 in gaming... leaving very little reason to wait to buy a more expensive card that will be slower in almost every major title during it's lifespan.
