Deciding between a GTX 1070 and GTX 980Ti?

Hi Everyone

I am looking at doing my first build after quite a few years and trying to get back up to speed with what is available now. I am looking in to GPU's I am struggling to decide between a GTX 1070 or a GTX 980Ti? (First world problems I know);)

When it comes to the make of card I have been looking at the MSI GTX 1070: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-geforce-gtx-1070-gaming-x-8g-8192mb-gddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-32a-ms.html
and then the GTX 980 Ti would be: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...hics-card-gtx-980-ti-gaming-6g-gx-287-ms.html

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and I am open to hear any suggestions for other makes as well.

Thanks :D

The smart move is the 1070, It's the newer tech and it shows better results in DX12 titles so going forward the 1070 will be the better card.

100% correct. End of story.

Just for the DX12 performance, Displayport 1.3/1.4 and HDMI 2.0 Future proofing alone it is a better card...performance is a nice bonus

Now the interesting question is which 1070 :)

As said, the 1070 is the better buy, no question. In addition to the benefits mentioned it also uses ~100W less power under load. As much as I like my Gaming X though, I wouldn't pay £470 for it (got mine for £420 before the prices skyrocketed). The Palit GameRock Premium model is £50 cheaper and every bit as good (except perhaps the colour scheme).

Excellent. So the 1070 it is then. Now Joe_Easy has a good question with which card to go for? Would there be a particular brand to look at, or are they all pretty much the same?

Thanks for the quick and really helpful replies :)

depends what you want I suppose. If you're looking at warranty - Zotac has 5 years but the Amp Extreme is not exactly cheap.

If you only care about the price there's a KFA2 in stock right now for 380.

I've always gone for the EVGA cards as their warranty is transferable if you want to sell it in a few years time to fund your next upgrade.

If you don't think you will sell it then go for the cheapest card with enough warranty :) https://www.overclockers.co.uk/zota...ddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-103-zt.html

That's the one I'd go for if not EVGA

It all depends how long you intend to have the card for, me myself I was in the same boat and was going to sell either one to my twin for cheap as soon as the 1080 Ti hits so it was just to tide me over untill then. I've had a 980 Ti before and sold that for £500 close to 3 months ago now, and with the cheap price of the 980 Ti at £359 I got that instead of the 1070 at £420 just to do me till bug pascal comes out in which I'll sell the Ti for £200 to my twin brother, so I won't be loosing out as much as I would have if I had bought the 1070 and since he's only at 1440p and coming from a 660 Ti with the overclock I have on this it's roughly 4 times faster than his 660 Ti

Is this question still floating about lol :p

Yep still is, surprised no ones come along yet to say... But but a 980ti kingpin under ln2 beats a 1070 overclocked....

As if that was a good argument for day to day use playing games!

Failing that I'm surprised that we haven't had the but...but the 1080 (and 1070) are 'mid range' cards where as the 980ti is 'high end' but yet slower in the same way that the 8800gtx ultra I have in the cupboard is super high end with it's big die and 384 bit memory bus but yet gets beaten thoroughly by a 960

I wouldn't buy a new 980Ti over a 1070, but a sub £300 second hand 980Ti is a very nice option. Just waiting for mine to arrive :)

Is it a Gigabyte from amz? Reason I'm asking is because I got one from there and I'm pretty sure the seller is a scammer and is just wasting my time.

Failing that I'm surprised that we haven't had the but...but the 1080 (and 1070) are 'mid range' cards where as the 989ti is 'high end' but yet slower in the same way that the 8800gtx ultra I have in the cupboard is super high end with it's big die and 512 bit memory bus but yet gets beaten thoroughly by a 960

Let's not go there on what's high mid range :p

After seeing the gains the 1070/80 get in Tomb Raider with dx12 async, i'd definitely go with the new tech over the old.

Unless you can get a 980ti really cheap second hand.

Got any links? I'd be interested to see. Can't find anything.

People are still testing but already people are saying Maxwell hasnt got hardly any gain whereas Pascal does.

That is what happens with every new card anyway. The old one probably gains 20% from drivers over time but then is fully maximised, so if the new card matches the old one, you can expect up to 20% gains over time.
