How much do people spend on cars?

I spend about 15% of my net monthly income on my car. I would be willing to spend more but am currently prioritising buying a house. Still fairly cheap for a Megane 275 though to be honest

Just figured out that mine is currently 15% but is liable to increase to 25%. 'Small' price to pay for something I enjoy immensely IMO... :)

Too much :p

Bought the Starlet GT Turbo for a grand, built it back up to roadworthy condition, then paid for a forged rebuild (~£2k), coilovers (£600), Ogura single plate (£400), and quite a bit more on various stuff added up.

Now looking at getting a respray as the previous owners efforts leaves a lot to be desired.

Please someone tell me to stop (but I probably won't)

So far this year ive had car mot'd and serviced ~£500, 1 new rear tyre £220, ins £300, tax £290, getting new discs and pads this weekend ~£650. So total is £1960 (not inc fuel), thats about 6.8% gross. However its appritiated again this year:D.

Nissan leaf
Fuel <£10 per 1000 miles, Free at work.
Depreciation 0 ( PCP )ved 0 deposit 0 service £50 a year includes breakdown cover.
Cost £150 a month insurance £220 a year
= 6%

I was spending £270 (inc private fuel) a month on an Audi A4 Avant as a company car, then i hit the 40% tax bracket last year and started doing the sums and realised that ive not even been doing enough private miles to warrant the fuel card at 20%!

Ive been a bit sneaky and negotiated my way out of the fuel card, and the company has ended up buying me out of it, as I was one of the last few with that private fuel benefit, which I found strange, but im not complaining.

My next car will cost me £278 a month, and fuel around £35 a month. Which i think isnt bad for running a Volvo XC60 R design, I did contemplate running a Dacia sandero and saving a shed load of cash, ie money back in my pocket to the tune of about £100 a month, but it would mean doing 20k miles a year for 4 years in Dacia sodding Sandero!

Sadly we cant opt out of the company car scheme at our place.

But the problem there is that you end up with a Nissan Leaf. :D

May as well get an Oyster card at that point. :p

I shouldn't have created this thread. I've just been hit with a near £700 repair bill on my Mondeo 2.5T for new camshaft belt and tensioner (due next year anyway to be fair), drive belt tensioner, a pulley, a couple of seals and a water leak repair.

I need to find a good Ford indie near Manchester.

I don't think it's that great either, was that really the best car on the list?!

I'm surprised it's still around, it's been going since last decade after all. But then I guess it's Volvo, so perhaps I'm not surprised..

Car is paid for now, so my only real expense is fuel and tax.

Fuel is about 45 a mth, tax 185 a yr (15 a month or so), so barring any maintenance I only have to pay 60 a month, plus a service once a year. Quite cheap really.

Well, forgot insurance, thats another 40 a month. So a nice round 100.

Plus depreciation, even if it's paid for it's still an asset losing value.

Sadly being a boring family bloke now, i needed a car to accomodate 3 child seats across the back (or 2 seats and a human), and most cars cant do that, unless its a MPV, and im not ready for that. I would have loved to go for a A6 or 5 series estate, but they simply werent fit for my purpose. and the new E class estate isnt out yet, so the Volvo it was! The Q5 was too similar to my current car and the X3 felt rather cheap inside. I couldnt have a saloon again, life with an estate is just so much easier for a family chariot.

Our car list is fantastic, my current requirements are not :P But ive gone for the R design Lux with pana-roof,xenons,HK audio, heated everything, and its 190ps engine, so its actually a better car than my A4 Avant in many ways!

That sounds an absolute rip off! My ST has the same 2.5T and I had the cam belt, water pump and aux belt done for £380

Mine is about 12% of net salary. Biggest part of that is depreciation which isn't easy to work out yet. Based it on the standard Supercharged RRS but the SVR seems to be holding value a lot better at the moment, but that may change when the new model comes out later this year
