Is it worth the extra £220?

Apparently it doesn't effect battery life too much.. If i got the 1080p display would i regret not forking out the extra £220 for something i plan to use for the next 5 or so years?

Touch would be handy for me with note-taking diagrams (university)

Specs on both:
Intel core i7-6700HQ 3.5ghz Quad core
16gb DDR4 2133mhz
512gb PCIe SSD
Nvidia GTX 960M

15.6" FHD 1920x1080 laptop = £1308
15.6" 4k UHD 3840x2160 touch screen laptop = £1528

Any advice would be grateful.

I've heard differently, reading through a few forums the 4K version seems to get ~4-6 hours and the FHD gets 7-8. The FHD is apparently matte too, whereas the 4K is glossy and a touchscreen. That said some recent driver/bios updates are meant to help with battery life, but I'm not sure how far that goes.

They're both meant to be attractive panels, but people seem to rave about the 4K screen.

Thank you for the reply, I guess i dont want to be kicking myself for not getting the bigger screen when productivity needs it i.e. full side by side windows (i know its only 15inches ha)

Would turning the res down to 1080p for general purposes when taking notes watching youtube/browsing the web save battery? or does it not really make a difference..?

The touch screen i know will be useful for my degree as there will be plenty of diagrams to make note of.

Apparently not, because it still displays it using the physical pixels, it just stretches the 1080p images across them instead of rendering all of the pixels individually. So your options are to take a spare battery pack with you (although I've heard some people say that the XPS15 is fussy about which USB C packs it'll charge with), or stay near a socket, or go FHD.

I've agonised over this exact choice for a few weeks and eventually decided to hold off for a newer machine :p
 
According to a friend who bought the 4K version a few weeks ago, no. Win10 scales rather poorly on his regardless of the scaling factor he chooses. This makes some text illegible as the areas that scale badly are also heavily blurred.

He is not a happy bunny after spending over £1.5K on something he can't use.
 
I'd stick with the 'Full HD' display. As others have stated, a 15" 4k screen seems rather pointless; it brings no real benefits.

Also, in my opinion, touchscreens on laptops are pointless.

My Dell Precision M4800 has a 1080p 15.6" display and it is perfectly usable without having to use scaling, so avoids any display issues. Also connects natively to most external displays when running presentations and demos.

So where did the extra £60 come from?

We don't and cant control the pricing, our partners set pricing based on a number of factors, including demand and supply.....

In this instance I am confident, that this is BREXIT related. Certainly beyond our control, and OCUKs.

All hardware component costs (for all manufacturers) are traded in dollars,,, and we all know what has happened to the £ vs $ over the past 3 weeks.

I've had my 4k XPS 15 a week and a bit now and love it to bits - the keyboard has some slightly annoying key placements (like needing the function key to use end and home) but other than that I've had no issues with it really - plays games pretty nicely at medium settings @ 1080p too which is a bonus!

The screen is stunning - stuff just looks so crisp and of course 4k content on Netflix / Amazon / Youtube looks awesome even if it is perhaps a little wasted on a 15.6" screen.
 
ive got the dell xps 15 1080p and the screen is very good, i looked at the 4k one and what made the factor was the screen was very shiney on the 4k and at times couldnt see properly in daylight, while the matte finish was clearer.

also battery life aprox 1-2 hours more.
 
Everyone on the 7559 thread said get the 1080p. I got the 4k anyway and it's fantastic. As long as you can handle the reflection I'd say go for it.

Scaling is fine 99% of the time. Where it doesn't scale well is a program I use all day every day. But it's only for window tabs so I can handle it.

Games, just switch down to 1080p.

It's not been great admittedly but it does last a few hours outside of gaming on battery but then I just plug it in when I'm gaming on it!

Love the screen here too - not got any noticeable ghosting when browsing that I'm bothered about and the performance generally is stunning - but then I did get the highest spec machine!
