Outrage that it was not banned sooner or that it is not banned in the UK as an alternative to actual treatments.

:D

Apologies for the clickbait title. So vets are calling for a ban on homeopathy, which is a good thing because selling fake cures for profit while promoting a concept which may turn people away from real medicine in the future is wrong.

I am surprised that homeopathic treatments are not banned from being prescribed as treatments, given they have been disproved to work and have never been accepted by academics in the medical field. It has been on heavy decline for years in the UK but still gets prescribed by the odd GP/vet but now it is at the request of the patient rather than advised by the doctor.

In 1991 up to 37% of general practitioners (GPs) used homeopathy, but a review carried out by West Kent NHS Primary Care Trust in 2007 found that less than 1% of registered patients were referred for homeopathic treatment, and that this was almost always at the patient's request rather than as the result of a clinical decision. In 2011 the British Homeopathic Association said that 400 GPs used homeopathy in their everyday practice. The British Homeopathic Dental Association (BHDA) claimed to have 69 dentists, while the British Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Surgeons had 36 vets listed as members. There are over 41,000 GPs and around 24,000 registered veterinary surgeons in the UK, and almost 23,000 dentists doing NHS work in England.

I just dont understand why people bother going to see a professional if they decide that they will ignore their advice, assume their sub par education on the subject better and then carry on with some crap outdated treatment based on the ideas which are not only disproved but way outdated.

As a form of placebo treatment for a patient with mental illness it might have a place.
As for an animal, the placebo can only work for the human owner, madness if they actually think an animal will get any better?

Some cultures see a decline in use, my issue with it as a placebo is that it tends to brainwash close family and friends who end up swearing by it.

Just give them some coloured sugar pills with a big warning on the packet if you want to give them a placebo. Patients knowing its homeopathy is the dangerous parts.

If I'm honest, I don't actually know what Homeopathy is. I could google it but, well.... I just don't care.

Essentially an alternative medicine which requires the the taking of medicine made by dilution of what causes an illness or may be directly linked to it, into large quantities of water. The guy who invented it refused to believe there was any point in alleviating symptoms when giving treatment and that disease was caused by 'miasms' which could be more easily attracted due to negativity. These miasms were not caused by dirt or bacteria or any invading entity but rather was a fundamental of your surroundings and being.

To give you an idea on how diluted these solutions are, many of the treatments are diluted into water to the point where it is very unlikely even a single molecule of the original substance exists.

Quite simple really ailments are treated by small doses of substances that in large doses cause the same symptoms of the ailment.

Thus I can take small doses of cyanide and live forever.

You forgt the more diluted it is the stronger and better it works, and sometimes you do not use the poison, but the remedy.
Also during the dilution, you have to take the beaker and 'bang' it against the table, as that is the full activation.

Someone please link the youtube video of mitchell and webb doing medical homoepathy.i cant on ipad.

I hadn't actually seen that before. Very apt :D.

Iirc we do have a few really into the alternative medicine on here. I look forward to them posting about the travesty of removing this lifeline.

The more dumb people to fall to homeopathy the better surely, rest of the species improves.

You say that but i dont think believing in homeopathy is down to how intelligent you are and is as much down to how vulnerable and tolerant to stupid views you are.

Our society seems to be pumping out tolerance of the wrong kind these days; tolerance to stupidity. Where being sceptical of widely accepted views and opinion of experts is almost praised and further backed up by the thousands of keyboard expert conspiracy nuts available through a quick google.

Just look that the anti-vaccine people. They become vulnerable due to a child's death or a family members unfortunate birth defect and they find out that many people have contacted each other over the internet to discuss the cause as a fact. Now if you took the proportion of these people, they are a tiny minority compared to the total but the power of the internet has allowed them to congregate and build up some false credibility, luring the next victim of stupid and venerable to their cause. There is a small amount of sane reasoning hidden behind tons of crap and anecdotal stories, served with skewed and carefully chosen statistics, accompanied with a good dose of government conspiracy to discredit medical professionals or claims made by medical researches

"By definition, alternative medicine has either not been proved to work or been proved not to work. Do you know what they call alternative medicine that's been proved to work? Medicine." (Tim Minchin, 'Storm')

End of debate...

No, there are better ways to achieve placebo, than the dangerous world of homeopathy.

Go into any homeopathy shop and you will get lethal advice
And nothings changed in over a decade since the last official report warning of the dangers.

Some of the questions that skeptics groups go and ask, is about malaria they've had one of two replies from all shops they've visited. Take this which has no effect, or go travelling if you get it come back and see me.

It needs banning and shops owners need to be jailed if found for false claims.
If people go find it themselfs on the internet then you can't do anything about it.

Thankfully after a win the other year iirc Leeds NHS trust, being forced to stop it, other trusts are now reviewing it. After the government refused to intervene and said it was down to the NHS trust to ensure treatment worked and was financially worth while. Which it isn't all reports show it's an upgrade utter waste of money
