Lowcostholidays has gone bust

It seems, like lastminute.com, they are based in Spain, and as such have to have financial security protection as an AVBAL number. I've been at work all evening so have not glad chance to research any of this yet. I've escalated a claim with PayPal so far and I'll check my travel insurance when I get home too. The very worst case though it seems we've lost about £380 for the hotel as the flights are paid for and sorted. I'll keep you updated on my progress anyway after I make some phone calls and send emails tomorrow for anybody else that may be affected. I'd like to ask that this thread stay on topic though please so any progress / advice is easy to find.

I have just checked my travel insurance and there is nothing about holiday companies going bust in there so i'm going to ring tomorrow, hopefully we can claim from them, even just for the hotel.

I'm in the same boat. I tried to claim a charge back on my Debit Mastercard but my bank says I have to wait for disputes to open Monday morning, along with my travel insurance funnily enough.

'Dodgy foreign based budget holiday company in financial collapse shocker!'

It's sad though as lots of people will have lost money because many shop on price and price alone. Sadly most will have used a debit card instead of a credit card to avoid the fees on the credit card, too.

Always book things like this by credit card - even if the fees are higher.

The thing is though, they used to be based in the UK and are quite widely used, you might naively as I, and a lot other people did, assume they were reasonably safe. I used them for about 4 years and never had any problems previously. They were one of the top UK holiday companies on Google. The error was not using a creditcard to book, but I've always avoided creditcards as I like to just save up and pay for things, but again, lesson learned.

I've booked with this company for a holiday in October and paid £1200 for our family of 4. I paid it on my Post Office Credit Card.

I've never done it before, but I should get my money back? I'm protected if I paid by credit card? .....

Should be protected by section 75 on creditcard yes

Question: just because the travel company is bust, aren't the flights and hotel still booked and paid for? So therefore your holiday should still be valid and go ahead?

Or am I missing something.

The flights are booked and paid for but the hotels are not - usually hotels invoice the supplier post checkout.

My flights are apparently still valid but I'll have to pay for the accommodation again and my airport transfers (about £800 in total) and then try and claim it all back.

Just come off the phone to the Post Office Credit Card people and it seems I have to put everything in writing and send it in a letter over to Dublin. Looks like this is going a very slow process, so bye bye holiday in October.

No the holiday is brokered through the company so the booking is with them.

I've used love holidays for a long time now over booking hotel and flight separately only due to when your paying for something 1500-2000 I rather pay for it in monthly payments.

My Granny always told me: "son, don't pay for yo' big-azz shiz with Paypal. Use a credit card - your purchase is properly protected that way"

Seems some others' grandmothers weren't doing their jobs...

Trouble with this advice is most holiday companies will charge you a 2-3% fee for using a credit card so it significantly increases the cost of your trip! What your Granny should have said was make sure the travel agent is ABTA/ATOL registered but then she clearly spent to much time trying to be down with the kids to offer sensible advice!

So do we, but even if we have the money in savings/current account we always pay by credit card for the protection, even its its just a part payment.

A few years ago we bought £4k of flooring and paid £100 on CC (to keep fees down) and £3900 on debit card.

Flooring company went bust before they delivered but got the full £4k back from the CC no problem.

wOW SO EVERY HOLIDAY BOOKED THROUGH LASTMINUTE.COM IS AFFECTED TOO?

What? No, it's nothing to do with Lastminute.com.

He's simply highlighting a section of the T&C's from a competitor which indicates there may be some sort of comeback from former Spanish registered firms.

That's going to be a lot of holidays

It would be, had you not just made it up :p
