Are there any small portable air conditioning units?

I've just moved into a new bedsit and everything seems to be going well with one exception. I live on the top floor and the heat in my room is unbearable (especially with the computer on).

Does anyone know if there are any small reasonably cheap air conditioning units out there that are just mean for one small room at all? I'm finding it really hard to concentrate at the moment because of the heat and the weather isn't all that hot. God knows what it'll be like if it ever gets up to 30 degrees or more.

Any help appreciated :).

Just Google portable air con, the rectangle standing ones work. Have them at work if the air con happens to die

I got this Challenge unit from Argos for £280 3 years ago (now £285). Does the job well for a 4m x 5m room. Adds about £2 to my leccy direct debit, but it's well worth it for me :-) Can't stand summer heat even if it's only a British summer. It's the size of one of those mini / drinks fridges.

My room is at the top of a three storey house and gets chuffing warm all year round, el cheapo 12" fan sat on the window sill with the window open as far as possible creates a lovely cool breeze as opposed to simply re circulating warm air in the room.

Added bonus of mangling any flies or moths that try to sneak in.

I have a portable from B & Q, cost me £199 about 5 years ago, best investment i ever made, you couldnt sleep with it on it's way too loud, but my PC room can get really hot, even in winter time, so anything above 20c makes my room roasting, infact its on right now :)

Wet the walls so it becomes like a nice damp cellar.
Problem solved. :D

Don't do this.

I lost a PC last year due to high humidity. I got an engineer's report from Samsung (liquid ingress even though no spillage involved), and thankfully got a replacement on my house insurance. After that, I got a dehumidifier. The A/C unit I linked higher up in this thread also dehumidifies.

Portable AC unit all the way.

I had a slimline second hand one at one time ( filthbay for £70).

Worked like a charm.

For me a fan just doesn't seem to cut it when it gets hot.

I have a portable aircon unit from B&Q for about £250 quite a few years ago. You'll find me continually hugging it over the next couple of days.

I have a CED unit that is amazing, was shivering in my bedroom yesterday :D Excellent quality as it gets battered every summer for the last 7 years with not a peep of a problem plus i got it secondhand on Ebay for like 80 quid.

I had a moth fly into my fan last night, it promptly exploded into a fine powder. :D

Remember to keep your curtains and windows shut during the day (if you go out to work etc). Open them later in the evening as it cools down and the sun stops shining directly in.

Bear in mind that these portable units are usually extremely noisy. They're annoying for sleeping, watching TV, etc, because of this.
