Hello,

Looking to purchase a new (most likely used) car within the next three months. Our requirements are leaning towards a 'medium' size SUV. My wife likes the high driving position and, having driven them extensively when holidaying in the States, I'm happy with them too (I'd prefer a fast Estate personally, but hey, life's about compromise). We need space for a Greyhound and also any future 'additions' to the family.

I'm looking at a budget of about £16,000 (could go a little higher) and would prefer to buy approved-used, with a preference on cars no older than 2 years. The list I have is:

Ford Kuga
Mazda CX-5
Kia Sportage
BMW X1

These cars have all the toys in different specs. Petrol is preferred, but not essential. Happy to give it a blast out every couple of weeks to prevent DPF issues.

While having these discussions, I've also come up with the idea of part-exchanging our other car too, which is a 2013 SEAT Leon. I cycle to work everyday and the idea of a medium size car doing nothing on the driveway most of the time doesn't really appeal. However, having access to a small run-around works and we can afford it.

So, I'm currently thinking part-exchanging/selling both cars (estimated to be about £9,000 in total), putting £5,000 of my own cash in and then financing the rest through a loan with the bank or a deal with the car company.

My questions are:

1) Has anyone part-exchanged two cars before with a view to buying two cars? Did you get a better deal (in your opinion) because of this?
2) Of those brands, what small cars might be worth considering? Thinking a budget of about £6,000 for this car and would ideally like some warranty (and in turn peace of mind). Top spec not essential, but SE level trim or similar would be good.
3) Am I approaching this really backward? Should I get my head looked into? The Leon has been a great car, however we simply don't need a 5-door hatch and SUV on the drive at the same time

Any helps, thoughts or musings would be most appreciated.

The previous generation X1 is really not a very good car and neither is it really a 'medium sized SUV'. It's just a crappy original 1 Series with slightly jacked up ride height and a terrible interior. The new model X1 is excellent but has only just come out and is probably outside of your budget.

Do you really need two cars? If you sold both and put it all towards the single car, you could buy it outright or have a larger budget, depending what you'd prefer to do. Don't go for a diesel if you don't do 15K+ a year in the car, but I'm guessing the petrol versions of these cars are going to be outnumbered 25:1 with their diesel counterparts.

I'd personally be thinking of just keeping the Leon though. I hate these mid-sized things. :p

Thank you. I don't really know why I put it on the original list. I'd been reading quite a bit about it this weekend and wasn't that impressed. I had also read that the new one is great but, as you say, is out of budget. My wife has suggested a 2-series Active Tourer but they really don't flick my switch. I love BMWs but I've decided now is not the moment to get one. If I'm getting one, it needs to be the right one for me. I'll try again in 5-10 years time.

Yeah that is a definite consideration, but on balance we've decided there is justification for a second car. I run a small business part-time and I'm also a teacher. So during my 'significant' holidays and coupled with occasionally being out and about doing stuff for the business, we have decided we do need a second car, but it only needs to be a run around. There's also times when I am at school late and don't cycle. Additionally, my mother-in-law and father-in-law live local and go on the insurance so they have a second car if need be.

Keep the Leon, it's not a big car and downsizing isn't really going to achieve anything.

The idea in the original post was a new one this evening. I'm already going off it. What I can get that's small car for £7,000 is nowhere near as nice as the Leon.

Exactly, if you already own it then it's a no brainer. It's not like it's a 7 series which takes up all the space on your drive and does 8mpg

This, surely better to have a car you already own and paid for sat on the drive doing nothing most of the time than paying for a newer one on finance to sit there and depreciate while you pay interest on it?
