Japan's SoftBank to buy ARM holdings

One can hope. But business is business.

Didn't Kraft promise to keep that Cadbury factory open with 1000+ jobs safe when they bought them, only to shut it and **** off?

Kraft didn't buy Cadbury for it's employees, it bought it for the brand(s). An investment in ARM is an investment in it's knowledge base and employees.

While I think the employees are safe, it's always a worrying time when a company is taken over.

It genuinely makes me sad to see how much of our IT industry has been eroded. In the 80's and 90's we had several computer manufacturers and many software and game companies. Just like the rest of our industry we've let it be bought or just allowed it to fall to the wayside through short term decision making by selling the company, or moving production to a cheaper country, or offshoring/outsourcing/whatever.

Short term decision making will sink this country :(

It's a lot easier to move a factory that mainly employs production line type staff than it is to do the same for a company that employs people with highly specialised skill sets and it takes years to bring new stuff fully up to speed.

It is often a fact that companies buying into a foreign market are doing so for taxation purposes, this is particularly so with large american companies with foreign earnings they do not wish to repatriate.

In this instance there is room to believe that it is a genuine expansion for growth rather than a relocation of capital.

Well, we're cheap to buy atm: perfect time for raiders, tax dodgers and genuine investors trying to snap something up for patents and long-term position. Doesn't look like the buyer is looking to kill it -- which is good -- but take the promised number of jobs with a pinch of salt.

factory workers are easily replaceable.... guys in Cambridge creating intellectual property that others haven't been able to compete with, not so replacable

and it isn't like demand for their skill set is going to decrease any time soon

No, all lies, foreigners won't invest here post-brexit... oh wait

Apple still could... the deal isn't done yet.

I'm not entirely sure selling off our most successful companies to foreign investors at a 10% discount is a huge positive tbh.

I can't see them shedding any jobs unless there's a massive downturn in ARMs fortunes. A lot of the vaule of that company is the people that work there, its very difficult to ship the R&D the work abroad and still expect the same standards.
