Are there any small portable air conditioning units?

Bear in mind that these portable units are usually extremely noisy. They're annoying for sleeping, watching TV, etc, because of this.

But so is a fan that can shift enough air to cool you down. I've got a pedestal fan for in the garage and when that's going full speed you can't have a conversation with someone near it. It's pretty blowy though so can't complain :)

I bought one of these on Saturday from John Lewis, not really for the fan element, more for the air clearing aspect as I suffer from asthma.

Very expensive, but funky and seems to create a nice clear air flow. However, a fan is never any good at cooling a hot room in hot air, it just isn't so in my bedroom I have one of these.

This works well, it's not the best one I've had but once you realise you need to totally ignore the TERRIBLE instructions, because they make no sense and that 'cool' isn't the best setting to cool, for that you need 'dry' (yea I know...) then it means you have a lovely cool room each and every night. I've had AC units for over 20 years, worth their weight in goal in my book.

This is what I'm using atm.

Don't do this.

I lost a PC last year due to high humidity. I got an engineer's report from Samsung (liquid ingress even though no spillage involved), and thankfully got a replacement on my house insurance. After that, I got a dehumidifier. The A/C unit I linked higher up in this thread also dehumidifies.

Mate I was only messing, did'nt think anyone would take it serious

Yep dont do it.

How do these "portable AC" units work? If they don't dump heat outside then it's physically impossible for them to cool the room down. Or do they just blow cooled air and dump the heat into the room giving the impression of cooling?

They pump hot air outside.

Where are you venting the hot air?

We've got an electrolux portable AC unit in my the living room for my mother's comfort, and it is lovely walking into there :)

It worked out about £300 from JL with a 3 year full warranty etc (we paid about £40 for that on top of the normal 2 year basic one they do).
However you do need to have something for it to drain into as in this weather it's pulling about a litre an hour of moisture out of the air, and whilst it's got an internal tank it's a pain to empty.

I'm not, it has a compartment for ice and water. :)

Pulls air in, which flows over the ice and water tank and blows it back out, all nice and cool. It's not perfect but it certainly helps.

They have a flexible hose that you run out of a window. You can get kits to seal around the window opening.

I have a portable AC unit, from homebase in 2013.

Has the pipe that goes out the window and its incredible, brings the room right down and not humid at all.

Its loud but I dont care.

Yup for my mum we use what used to be the vent for a gas fire they had removed 20 years ago (it took a few minutes to find it and fit the right adaptors).

In her bedroom it's out the window through a window kit.

I got the same Challenge unit from Argos, for my son, that Pawnless Endgame did. It has some ducting and a fitting in case you fancy drilling a large hole in your wall. I didn't fancy doing that so I mounted it to a bit of wood with pipe insulator round the edges. We have sliding windows so all my boy needs to do it slide his window up a bit, put the fitting in the window and press the window back on top of it holding it in place. Cools his room down lovely, no good for more than one room though, tried opening his door to get some benefit to the rest of the house, no such luck.
Just to add, the ducting absolutely needs to go outside, the heat that comes out is extreme.

Works a treat though, just need to remember to empty the moisture capture tray and receptacle. Only found out it had one when the plug on the end got knocked off and a load of water soaked through the carpet to the ceiling underneath, oops.

I just bought that portable air con unit from Argos linked on the previous page and so far it seems to be working really well. Keeps my room nice and cool even when I'm using my computer.

I forgot to get rid of the water for the first 40 minutes or so but I've temporarily solved the problem by putting a lunch box under the water outlet. I'll have to buy the water pipe for it at some point though.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Now I can sit in my room and not feel like I'm melting which is a really unpleasant feeling.

If you are going to get one, there's a good chance you'll only use it a few days a year. That is fine, but don't forget the risk of legionella bacteria which will grow in the system and collection tray.. ensure you fully flush and clean it before and after storing it away for long periods.

:)
