Go try something different. I did a lot of trading recently to up my trade rating. Done that and have all the engineers unlocked that I want.
I'm now thinking of a minor refit to the Conda, and then to take it surveying. By that, I don't mean a 25k LY jump. Rather to find unexplored systems just outside the bubble and fully survey each system. I've only done one 5K LY run, so I'm conscious that I'm new at exploring, so I like the idea of being say 1K LY from home, which means I could make it back in say 25 jumps with my uprated conda. Clearly a good thing if I badly damage the ship during landings or similar.

Option B, join Mobius, wing up and go kick some butt in a CZ. That's something I'm also considering.

I recommend journeying out to the nearby nebulae. It makes for a fun journey and there is something to reward you when you get there and the nebula fills the whole sky. They are all generally scanned to bits, but on the way out you'll get some data. It's good fun if you go with a wingmate and you'll get some nice screenshots.

It has been about a year since I've played this. Gave up because it just became too much of a grind and I wasn't really enjoying the overall experience. Has this changed at all, or is it still essentially the same? I'm kind of thinking also with No Man's Sky on the way, this won't hold much appeal for me once that's out.

so i went to lavecon over the weekend, not really much news stuff that came out, apart from a little bit of information about 2.2 the passenger/tourist patch, a second bubble around jaques.

What blew me away from using the oculus rift for the first time... its a complete game changer! and it's now on my list of things to buy within the year!

I did buy an EdTracker for cockpit movement and already its made a real difference!

Seems they said GamesCon should have some big reveals?

If you're using an EDTracker, might I suggest you use OpenTrack. The benefits are:-
1) There's no config in ED at all. It detects TrackIR and just works. Especially nice that you don't risk losing your entire config just because the EDTracker isn't plugged in.
2) No mapping/config in ED other and 1:1 mvoement response etc.
3) You can do mapping curves iN OpenTrack, so around the center it's less responsive, and as you move out, it's more responsive. Seems a nice way to use it.
4) You get head tilt too. Completely pointless, but a nice gimick :)

ps: YOu can set OpenTrack to start automatically on detected ED running.

I recently went to planet Wilson to see Cmdr Bomba while he was awaiting rescue. Just over 1000ly from my starting point in the bubble. On the way I discovered 2 unclaimed ELW and a WW. They were all between 500ly and 1000ly from the bubble. Lots of other unclaimed systems and planets within that distance.

On short trips like that you can use whichever ship you like flying. On the trip I mentioned above I took my FDS with a jump range of about 16ly. It did take me 88 jumps but that just means more exploration data collected. I later flew back in my DBX which was much quicker of course.

Previously I have used a Courier for short exploration trips. Medium jump range and looks good on the screenshots.

Ok... I just... ARRGHGHGHGHG.

I want to love this game so much. Times I feel like... yes that's it Im hooked...

Others Im like... sigh, just a grind.

And as one person mentioned I feel like Ive kind of "completed" the game since getting the Conda.

I did splash some money on a Vulture just now and when I jumped into it, was shocked at how much more manuevrable it was the conda.... but yet how much easier it is to get blown out of space against enemy condas with a few well placed shots...

I don't want to hate on this game at all. I really don't, and yet...

Perhaps I need a break from it :)

Do it have a break. I bought it in Beta played it only game I did for a year. Then stopped went and Played ARK instead. Now I am back on elite and loving it so much as changed.

Always good to have a break from a game you love. I know you get the feeling of will I ever go back to it. Honest if it means so much to you you will. But you do need to find another game to sink into for a few months.

Yeah, just have a break :)

I come back to it every couple of months, love it for the first week or two, then get bored again :p It's such a beautiful game, it's sometimes great to just fly around a bit and marvel :p

The story arc surrounding the Unknown Probe just got interesting. It appears to interact with the Advanced Discovery Scanner.

The Dev's hinted that the UP requires external software in order to decode. So, someone's dropped the audio into a spectrograph and the following pops up:

There's lots of supposition that it's similar to the Voyager probes that we sent out, perhaps showing us where it came from. Other ideas suggest it's a map of Merope 5c (where the probe points to) and that the line at the bottom right is significant. Interestingly if you put the centre at 0,0 degrees, the two bottom left lines point to Barnacle locations.

I think something significant is about to happen for sure!

Taking bets on it will involve GRIND.

I love the story and some of the background work they put into ELITE, makes it alive a little, but when I play it, it just feels the game is against me wanting to enjoy it.

When i left it was a crazy price for flying my anoconda, just one trade hop would cost me the cargo in repairs or 90% of it. NOT FUN.

Not had that problem? My conda doesn't cost much to run. Even when I do something silly and lose most of my Hull.

That was a bug somewhere between 1.1 and 1.2 IIRC. I take it you've not played for a while?

I'm sat down Merope way now, only a jump or 2 out at some station or other, might drop on now and go have a fly about..

Out of the country this week, so no opportunity to either fly anything, or install the 1070 that arrived yesterday as the pre-requisite for (at some point) adding a VR headset.

I did update the jump range on my Conda with another L5 attempt, which has pushed it out another 4LY, so that's a good thing. Being fair, I don't see me using the Conda much, apart from for exploration. It's size is restrictive for just too many of the missions that I seem to end up regularly doing.
I've also acquired some other interesting mats including a couple of exquisite focus crystals, so I think I'll give my Vette an L5 PD update early next week.
The Vette has now been pretty heavily overhauled with mods, my intention being to go give it a try in some of the CZs soon. Couldn't see the point in putting the insurance fee at risk prior to ensuring it could take some genuine abuse.

Been on break since I took a large hit and lost a LOT of money in ship insurance costs...

Is the FDL still pretty much the go-to ship for heavy hitting and manoeuvrability?
I'd just gotten a decent build on the Python when they nerfed that and upped the FDL specs...

I think the engineers has made the biggest impact to the FDL. Where previously the FAS had been a "go to" combat ship, shields have suddenly got a LOT more effective. As such, the substantially better shields of the FDL make it a very interesting "starting point".
For those who haven't checked it out yet, the FDL has really good shields. Engineer upgrades mean that those shields go from "good" to "wow", with the potential to add lots of resistance, and upgrade strengths.
