No V5c and travelling to France

OK I was stationed in Germany for 5 years spent lots of time driving through France, Belgium and Holland.

On the very rare occasion I did get stopped for something I never once had any hassle for not being able to produce a V5 or the British Forces Germany equivalent.

It sounds like you are hunting for excuses not to take your car.

The RAC do not care if you have a v5 or are even the registered owner of the vehicle all they care about is, are you a paid up member.

I've read about people having rac refusing to deal with a breakdown when a v5c couldn't be produced.

After a quick google the only reference I can find for this is actually this post on here from you.

I could get in a crash or break down. I've read about people having rac refusing to deal with a breakdown when a v5c couldn't be produced.

Sounds like a load of rubbish to me. Are you saying everyone who's a member of the RAC carries the V5 in their car? Considering it's not actually recommended for security reasons, I'd be surprised if even 20% did. There's nothing on their website about it either.

If you won't listen to someone who actually lives in France, or the numerous people who've driven thousands of miles over here who've posted, there's not a lot more we can do really.

Every guide is stating it is a requirement to have with you and whilst the issue isn't just that I don't have one it's that my car isn't even registered as me being the keeper.

I've heard nothing more solid than "probably not" with regards to will I be screwed if anything happens.

If by screwed you mean there's a tiny chance of you getting a small fine then yes. We've categorically proved it's not a requirement for the insurance of the RAC.

Best you can do is get the V62 form with £25 postal order or cheque (postal order probably better as no waiting for cheque to clear) sent to them ASAP and hope they deal with it quickly and get it back to you before you go. At this stage its unlikely unless you can get it sent today by special delivery to be with them tomorrow. and there may be a VERY slim chance it'll be back by tuesday. A colleague of mine had his back within 3 days of sending his V62 form off.

You've been driving about for 7 months in a car that isn't even registered in your name and you're worried about a trip to France?

Yes but obviously I haven't been aware until this point but now I'm aware and it's been made clear there's a chance I could have it checked when I'm in a foreign country and there's a chance I could get stitched up.

Talk about a worrying Nancy. I am surprised you even leave the house, ever, tbh.

Ill take that one :(

I don't normally worry about too much but I think this one has definitely got to me.

I've sent the forms off on the quickest delivery so I'll call on Friday and see where I'm at.

As long as I'm a registered keeper of the car that's all I'm worried about tbh I don't care about physically having a copy of the V5c.

Being the registered keeper will make absolutely no difference in France (or anyone apart from the police over here as they'll be one of the few people who can get that info) as they have no access to the DVLA's systems so if that's all your worried about then stop worrying and start driving.

You could drive through a speed camera at 150MPH in France in a UK registered car and absolutely nothing will happen. They have no authority to access any DVLA database whatsoever. Seriously, stop worrying.

I took everyones advice and used my car, didn't get arrested or have my car turned into a cube so win win!
