Artificial sweeteners, have they been proven safe yet?

Aspartame has been found to increase oxidative stress in rats, something which is associated with all kinds of problems. With that in mind I won't touch the stuff.

With a healthy diet a lot of sweet food and drink becomes unpalatable anyway. I would rather drink water or milk to stay hydrated.

My sweet tooth is pretty much non existent now.

I tend to find people who replace sugar with artificial sweeteners tend to have poor diets anyway. Also see a lot of people drinking diet drinks that are still clearly overweight.

To be fair the rat study assuming there's not one I can't find was using 40mg/kg equivalent of 19.7 cans of Diet Coke for an average human per day.

If they're drinking that much I imagine it's not going to be the aspartame that kills them. Anyone drinking that much Diet Coke is probably going to have dubious diet choices :D.

Edit: Been a prat and didn't convert. Actually about 3 cans a day.

According to ~>Dg<~ that gives me diabetes.

Is that dose the human dose? If rat then with the different metabolic rate between rats and humans, the human equivalent dose for an average weight human (60KG) would be around 6.4mg/kg. That would be around two cans of diet coke.

Here's a study which tested on rats with a dose of 75 mg/kg. This resulted in cell damage of the brain.

Another study which links oxidative stress to diabetes:

Opps no I did not. Sorry :(.

Still 3 cans a day is excessive. Definitly not as excessive as 19.7 though :D.

I understood about two of those words which were 'the' and 'and'.
Have you got the version for a 5 year old?
Make it 4 year old.

It's basically saying that oxidative stress can lead to hardening of the arteries for people with diabetes.

This paper is a bit more descriptive re. oxidative stress and diabetes:

http://cdn.intechopen.com/pdfs/35949.pdf

Under normal conditions and in most diseases including diabetes mellitus, mitochondria are the main source of RS and oxidative stress... Within physiological conditions, the body is protected from the detrimental effects of these free radicals by a network of antioxidant defense system. However, this defense system becomes impaired in diabetes mellitus and is further exacerbated by chronic hyperglycemia which generates ROS, resulting in oxidative stress.

Also a more recent paper here:

https://www.researchgate.net/public...on_long-term_effect_of_aspartame_in_rat_brain

This study provides a scientific evidence to conclude that aspar-
tame is toxic to the body system and particularly in brain it increases
the free radicals and triggers the apoptosis. Aspartame consumption
in a long-term basis may affect the brain. It may be due to its metabo-
lite methanol aspartame may act as a chemical stressor as indicated by
the corticosteroid level. Still more studies are required to understand
more about aspartame. With the accumulating data from scientific
research must reach the public as aspartame is freely available in
pharmacy / super market and consumed largely by diabetic as well as
young people who want to reduce weight.

just have the normal sugar version

compare the effects of trying and then worrying about a non sugar substitute drink maybe suffering headaches brought on by worry anxiety or whatever.

or just have a normal drink with sugar in and dont worry about it.

the sugar variety will end up being better for you :p

had a similar discussion with a women who always went on about eating too much salt. i said with the amount of worry and energy you spend on going on about eating too much salt it would have been healthier to eat the salt in the first place. :D
A women though

This stuff gives me the most awful headaches:

http://www.lidl.co.uk/en/8786.htm?action=showDetail&id=24372

No idea what/why and I can't find a proper ingredient list it just lists "made from concentrate" and vitamin values. Was already suspicious before this thread but spent the last 2-3 weeks alternating between having it and not having it and it is pretty conclusively the cause of a very specific type of headache.

aspartame is produced as the excretion of gm ecoli bacteria. It is essentially the fecal matter of ecoli, yummy.
