GTX 1080 Advice Required

I've read very good things about that card.

There are cheaper alternatives, it seems the Palit ones are very good and a fair bit cheaper, just shorter warranty.

Depends what you want. I got a Zotac Amp Extreme, very quiet, cool, great factory OC, but it's expensive now.

Hi guys,

Thinking of purchasing this 1080:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...dr5x-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-323-ms.html

Is this good for the money? Any better alternatives?

I am looking for a card that is quiet.

Thanks :)

I see you get replies from the likes of Gregster that basically leads you towards the 1080, but for some reason refuses to ask you the hard questions.

Like what resolution do you game at? Are you looking for a GPU that lasts you into the next few years at said resolution?

Beware of asking questions from fans of a specific card in this forum as you will soon see some fanboy behaviour.

If you're looking for a 4k card that will play games at max settings then wait for the Ti. If you want a 1440p card at Max settings then get the much cheaper 980ti. If you want a directx12/Vulcan card then get an RX480. If you just want to play your current directx11 games at higher settings and won't worry about future releases then maybe a 970, 980, 390x etc.

Thanks guys for the responses.

I quite like MSI as well and I like the Red/Black design of it. Comparing it to the Zotac/Palit variants, would you say the MSI is quieter? Can they all get to the same speed?

Cheers :)

Might help if you even read the title of the thread before replying and blaming Gregster for leading him to towards a 1080

they all seem to get to over 2k and some over 2.1 on air. Best is to probably let the card do its thing, if it's cool enough the core will run quicker anyway.

Thanks for the information. I will be playing at 1440p once I buy the monitor. 4K gaming I wouldn't rule out but I can't imagine me doing it anytime soon unless the GPU can handle it?

Would you not recommend the 1080 at all?

I have the MSI card and it's brilliant (although I am a self confessed MSI fan). To be honest I hardly notice the fans being on (they won't run at lower temps) and even when they are on, I don't really notice it.

I've got all sorts of videos relating to the MSI card on my YouTube channel, but you might like to check out my review video - or not ;)

The price seems to have gone up a bit since I bought mine though :(

No I would not if you are playing at 1440p. Waste of money. Buy a 980ti and use it as a stop gap until you decide on 4k. By then maybe a 4k card will be released!

you then need to decide which monitor you want, whether it will be GSync or Freesync, that will lock you into a specific vendor and then you can decide on which specific card you want.

Thanks mate will take a look!

1440P is the sweet spot for gaming in my opinion and as I also use a ROG Swift monitor (cheapo TN one mind), the 1080 runs perfectly with it.

I will stick with my first response as well :)

Very nice monitor that as well :)

Mate it's okay to waste your own money, but do you honestly believe the 1080 is for him? Look he can get a nitro fury and the above linked monitor for the price of ONE 1080! Seems you are wanting him to get what YOU would get and not what he needs. Not to mention the monitor I linked is IPS 144hz!

Just to clarify guys I will be going Nvidia and I am most likely buying this monitor:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus...descreen-led-monitor-black-red-mo-088-as.html

In terms of 4K, unless I can game comfortably at 60fps+ on high settings I can't see me doing this for a while.

that is a great monitor indeed you can run 3600 x 2100 on that not just 2560 x 1440p. I've got an older TN Rog Swift and it's amazing still.

In terms of 4k there will be some newer gen monitors coming out, I would not recommend even considering any of the current 4k screens.

gtx 1080 is expensive but it has the power to run anything you throw at it and will be top notch for years. You can more than likely get away with a 1070 as well, if you fancy spending a bit less. I would not buy any card with 4gb right now, regardless of discounts.

You should be fine with a new and cheap 980 TI ( these dropped in price like crazy )/ 1070 / 1080.
