Does anybody know a cause to my issue?

I know this is a needle in a haystack question, but its really, really bothering me. So, in Jan 2014 I bought my dream gaming computer, it seems the GPU I was recommended just doesn't want to hold in there for me.

It is a Gainward 780 Phantom edition, purchased from OC. I have had multiple issues and quite frankly the EXACT symptoms each time. I would be gaming for a very short amount of time, before my screen suffered pixelated weird lines/dots, the system would seem to turn off and the fans run at maximum speed to the point where it sounded like my tower was taking off into space. I have had this card replaced/repaired under RMA 2 times now, this is the 3rd time and its happend yet again.

9th May 2014 - First occasion.
24th Sept 2015 - Second occasion.
24th July 2016 - Third occasion.

Each time its been replaced, its worked beautifully like it should do so I am fairly certain the issue does still lay with the GPU I have. Here is a video of what is does, some games worse than others.. Arma, Rust, CSGO the screen shows bright lime/grey lines and the sound freezes, on video I was playing H1Z1 you can see the exact process it goes through on this video;

I apologise for the obnoxious keyboard sounds, nothing I can do to dull it out.

Is it me? Is it the GPU, am I at fault? Am I burning the card out? Literally all I do is game, I use a 1080p monitor @ 60hz, I take care of my PC I worked damn hard for it. I just dont get why this keeps happening over and over again.

OCUK have been fantastic, always handled the process for me.. Should I just bite the bullet and get a brand new 1080? I dont feel like I need it just yet, but I cant keep having this issue popping up, especially when I feel like I am at fault and just abusing OCUK and Gainward's RMA, although I am not I just feel like its my doing..

What power supply are you using? And are you running it at stock clocks?

I am using a 650w superflower PSU which was recommended to me by experts here, I presumed them to be experts because they all helped me so much. I have never overclocked anything, I have no idea what im doing in that department, I have never tinkered with it nor have I ever needed to. Its pure default.

Has it actually been replaced or just repaired? someone else on here had a problem like that with a Gainward 780 and they were reflowing it or something and sending it back and same problem would happen a few months later every time - can't remember what the outcome was.

Yeah a 650W should be fine for a 780 be a shame if it is a repeat issue with the card. Might be worth seeing if OcUK would consider side grading it due to the amount of times it has been sent back and fourth.

Do you have another pc you can test the card in to confirm it is that though it does definitely seem it is the card.

Drivers are up to date right?

This sounds like either a GPU problem or PSU problem. Ideally you could swap either into another system and test it.

Mate, im not going to lie to you I have absolutely no bloody clue. I was very very tempted to mark my second card but I never bothered to. Each time it came in the box, I think the first time it came in a brand new box, the second was very tattered, I certainly never sent it off like that.

I highly, highly doubt they sent me a new card back because as far as I am aware its been discontinued, plus I never get that lucky.

Its somewhat pleasant to know im not the only one, but I know this.. Never again will I buy a gainward card, ever.

I unfortunately dont, however I am 95% certain its the card again. You just know when you know, and I am not a virgin to this error, its happend so many times to me now I just know straight off the bat its a card. I would happily pay some extra and totally change out the card, but I cant say its OCUK's problem, they are a re-seller, I cant hold them responsible although nudge nudge OCUK, hook a brother up ;)

As stated above mate, I really think its the GPU again I would try if I could but I have no way unless I buy a brand new PSU, which to be honest I think is a waste of time because I am almost positive its the card as its the same issue again. My drivers are all up to date, I make sure to keep on top of that all the time.

I've found since 358.59 IIRC Kepler based cards don't seem the most stable in some games on just about every other driver release - quite a few older DX9 games like Skyrim and TDU2 I have to enable K-Boost and/or disable any overclocking above reference level or stuff like driver recovery kicks in - my brother ended up ditching his 600 series card for a 970 due to it while playing Guild Wars.

Unfortunately a few newer games require drivers more recent than that.

Where about are you located as if it's close enough i may be willing to come over with a 1080FE and see if the problem persists.

Derby, UK mate. But you really dont need to come over and take time out of your weekend to do that, honestly. I actually paid my next door neighbour £20 to run over my system, he told me it was the GPU before I even told him about my other cards having issues, after I had told him he said something about the thermal paste on the card but I am not about to open it up and void my warranty.

He seems like he knows what hes talking about, but he is no professional.

Edit: I am slow.. I see 1080FE, I thought you was talking about a PSU for a second.. Well I guess that would solve it after all, infact you know what... I have an old AMD card 7770Ghz edition, I am going to fire that up and see if the issue continues. ****, now to remove all of my Nvidia drivers -.-

I will report back later, going for a cuppa first.

Won't be a problem with thermal paste on the card i don't think unless the card is running at like 97+ degrees it would not cause issues.

Besides the fact even if you take apart a 10 year old card and re paste it you would not see a performance variation other than the cleaning of dust from the cooling fins.

Another thing, has the second monitor always been a factor since you got the card? Might be another thing to test without the monitor though also unlikely to be the problem as it certainly seems to be the card :)

I have always had 2 monitors, always mate since I bought my build. I replaced the main monitor (Acer) the one you see me filling out that gentlemen on from a bog standard 19' a while back.

I think all of the cards have turned faulty on this exact setup.

Should I ask my neighbour for the £20 back? lmao.

I would check the gpu temperatures first :) or have you already been monitoring these? you can use something like MSI afterburner to display this whilst gaming.

Also OcUK Tradition ( as per general discussion ) is to not ask for the money back but to covertly poo in his letterbox :) just FYI

I feel you ;), and I have actually been monitoring them temps with HWMonitor. They idle between 30-41*C however when gaming they seem to increase at 1-2*C every few seconds until it hits around 70+ then the game will crash/system shutdown and the fans spin up really fast.

I know this is a very normal temp 70*c for gaming, but every single one of these cards has done the same thing. Increased very fast 1-2*c then boom, around the 70*c mark it stumbles.

I just find it way too similar to my other 2 which is why I feel so sure.

Ok so, according to my past posts the first RMA I was sent was brand new I might of been wrong in mistaking a brand new box for a brand new card. The second card was a warranty replacement direct from OCUK.

Absolutely fair to be so sure the card is definitely off. I would be getting on the customer service section too :)

Indeed, I am more than sure I will get a reply Monday, thanks a lot for your help/advice though harry, legend. It's a shame I only use this forum when I have issues, I should come here more often.
