What happened between the 970 and 1070?

Both Intel and Nvidia have always out sold AMD even when AMD had the better products, they grew their market share against AMD during that time.

Clearly how competitive AMD are or not has nothing to do with it, nor will it ever.

a company does not increase its market share for no reason, they clearly offered something the market actually wanted.

Not sure you know what is what. When you look back through the ages and they can easily be found but AMD Vs NVidia was a tight run thing and when AMD competed, they had a much bigger market share. Give me two mins and I will get a graph showing what is and was.

At best AMD market share was 35 - 65 to Nvidia, but that was with AMD having GPU's faster than Nvidia's and cheaper, despite this AMD market share was falling during that time, AMD had low margins to stem the more rapid decline in their share.

its now about 15/20% to 85/80%.

Even if they have better cards than Nvidia its not going to stop further decline, it may slow it a little but AMD are rapidly heading for unsustainable market share and there is nothing that can be done about it.

I think we all have different prospectives: as far as I'm concerned the 1070 gives 980Ti performance at 400£, which allowed me to move from ti to 1070 for no extra cost.

A sidegrade which I'm fine with, since Software hasn't moved a bit since last year.
At 1440p I simply don't need anything faster.
The perfect 1440p experience can now be had for 100£ less than last year, it's not that bad.

Anyway I do think the lack of competition is the biggest factor.

Nvidia will price the cards whatever they want because they know you and people like you will pay just about whatever Nvidia ask, regardless of what AMD do.

And thats fine, just don't blame AMD for the bed you made for yourself.

Even when they have a competing product everyone just buys Nvidia instead. Consequently AMD are as poor as church mice and don't have the money to spend on R&D etc.

Expecting someone to come up with a competing product just so it lowers the cost of the product you want is expecting to have your cake and eat it. They're not a charity that exist to give everyone cheap Nvidia silicon.

Expect AMD's market share to decline even further and Nvidia's prices to rise even more steeply. Personally I think they should just quit the desktop PC market entirely and concentrate on other areas as they're on a hiding to nothing here but I suspect pride prevents them from giving up entirely.

Which is why its only a mater of time before Nvidia find themselves on their own.

20% market share is already not sustainable, they need to grow it significantly and its only going to decline further.

Nvidia are only making products that are priced similar to AMD to push them out, once out there is no need for it.

well, they need to up their game then and offer something a lot better.

They were in a very good position several years ago and could and should have done a lot better.

Purchasing ATI does not seem to have worked very well in their favor.

These days a lot of people look at the cards and think ... ok, you came up with a card which is roughly as good as something NVidia came out with 2-3 years ago. I am sorry but that's not good enough.

Right now Nvidia offers a lot of choice, cool and silent cards and good overclocks. Amd offers promises of good things to come at some point in the future.

There is no denying they do have some good things going for them, just not nearly enough and the market share reflects that.

Offer mediocrity and eventually you lose market share....

I will get lambasted for this but whatever - AMD have only themselves to blame. Historically they had the GPUs, they had the CPUs but poor marketing, poor strategies, crap drivers, too slow to get the performance the cards were capable of and far too slow on modern techs and that is why they lost ground. Now they have a 480 that tries to take on a 1060 at roughly the same price point, no custom cooled cards as of yet and more market share going the other way.

But drivers will get better, but DX12 will bring them to the forefront, but Vulkan is a big thing, but Vega is coming but but but. Seriously, I want AMD to do well so I can pick from competing companies however, I don't look at AMD in the same way as some do and I buy for enjoyment.

You will because no one was louder than you in perpetuating that rubbish, and you know its rubbish.

If you are not getting paid for typing this bile then you are certainly missing out..
