Ill be looking to upgrade from my 970 in the next few weeks.

now every GPU ive ever owned has been 2nd hand this doesnt bother me.
Ive been looking at new ones this time round but now Im thinking I could get a new 980ti for around the same price as a 1070.

so again going on my old method I could get one cheaper if need be but it still has me thinking.. would the 1070 be worth getting over the 980ti?

I game at 1080 and have no plans to go any higher resolution

I'd say 1070 although the price increases on some 1070's coupled with the discounting on some of the better 980ti's has made the decision a bit more complicated. For me the 1070 is worth a premium of about £50-70 over a 980ti based on the extra vram, dx12 and likely better driver support going forward

Having said that for 1080p do you really need to upgrade? Both the 1070 and 980ti are better matched to a 1440p res and the next rung down, the 1060, is not much of an upgrade from 970 unless your running out of vram....

The 1070 smashes 1080p while the 970 lags way behind it.

970 doesn't have the vram for higher settings in games already with us, not to say the 970 can't cope but the 1070 is maxing out everything so far where as my 970 ran great but with lesser settings.

Thought about the 980Ti but wasn't taking a chance with driver optimisations either after having to wait for 3 months until Nv fixed W3 on my other PC that was running a 670 at the time.

Definitely go for the 1070.

More vRAM, better DX12 support, better performance in general, much better VR performance, HDR display support.

Also likely to get even further ahead of the 980 Ti with driver improvements.

Depends on what you are willing to pay. If you want to pay more, then a 1070 is the option. The cheaper option includes some of the better custom 980ti's which overclock well. Unlike current AMD cards, the 1070 won't be improving too much over time. The driver improvement thing is mostly a myth, any improvements won't be significant.

RAM is no issue, 6GB is good enough. Considering the same custom model 1070 costs roughly £100 more than the same custom 980ti... I know which I'd go for.

If you're into VR then of course the 1070 is more capable and it doesn't suffer as much in DX12. Keep in mind that any DX12 exclusive games will be Windows 10 exclusive too, many developers don't want to leave out gamers on other OSes so often there would be options of different APIs.

Edit: At £400 at OCUK, you have the choice between cheaper 'plastic-cooler' 1070s or top-end 980tis. In fact the EVGA hybrid 980ti is just a tenner more... I will say the Gigabyte Gaming G1 1070 is a tenner more than that and the G1 is well-regarded as a custom cooler. Your money and your choice. Keeping in mind that the 1070 released well over £100 more than the 970 released at and miffed off a lot of folks.

Yeah 1070 is the way to go. Better drivers, more support for newer games and VR improvents if your that way inclined.

Definitely the 1070.

Although if Gibbo decides to properly fire sale the 980Ti's for £300 then it could be a decent alternative.

this is what has me looking at the 980ti's they have really come down in price for the high end ones.

Im not into the VR thing I couldn't justify the expense.

yea looking at the price of the top end 980ti's has got me thinking.. as said I cant see me doing the VR thing. I couldnt justify the expense I would rather buy a 2nd monitor and have some cash in my pocket..

Add in 980Ti's have better second hand availability and you can pick up a stonking deal if you're lucky :)
my thoughts exactly...

Well, looks like you already made up your mind before making the thread :p

I wouldn't say I have. Im still on the fence but after having another look I could buy a new EVGA 980Ti FTW or a Palit GTX 1070 for £380 it really is a hard choice..

It will be a few weeks before I can drop the cash on a card hence im looking at options.

Are you nuts? :eek:Get a 1070 the only reason to get a 980ti is a cheap one used...

When paying the same price, or a very similar one, I'd 100% go for the 1070.

Cheap 2nd hand 980ti or a new 1070.

Similar questions were being asked when the 970 was released, when at the time the 780ti was faster. It's clear now, though, which would have been the better purchase.

I had a shot of my mates 780ti ( well one of them as he has 2 in sli ) while my 970 was getting RMA'd and to be honest with you I thought the 780ti was a faster card..

it scored better on fire strike and any benchmarks I ran the 780ti was the faster card.

if it wasn't for it being a right noisy bugger I would still have it in as its still here.. :D

yea my thoughts are at the moment once I have the cash ill see what deals are around on the 1070's but if a good 2nd hand 980ti comes up cheap I might be swayed that direction.

Well maybe it's not so clear, then. :)

I thought the 970 had gained performance due to driver improvements over the last couple of years.
