Insurer back charging me £1000+

If they threaten legal action without payment.... Isn't that extortion? (I'm not a lawyer!)

Not if its a legal and legitimate debt, which it sounds like it might be. If it genuinely is the case that the insurance would have been £1000 more with the SP50 declared and he didnt declare it...

It does seem like an unusually high amount but then we dont know what it represents as a percentage of the policy value.

Tell them you wont be renewing.
End it there.
Cancel the Direct Debit.

Horrible advice. If the OP has been insured and didn't declare a previous speeding offense, then it's fraud and the insurer are entitled to do this.

If you cut the DD then they'll just call a debt collection agency and it'll just get worse for the OP. Legal issues a plenty.

Yeah - does sound a bit like they are being cheeky and attaching it to the remainder of the 2014-July2015 period as well as the most recent year but hard to know for sure without more detail.

I would just **** them off. Not like youve claimed under the insurance. (Or have you?)

**** em off.

Problem is the OP has a renewal in the middle of the period between the offense and now - really needs to know what is in the terms and conditions and potentially legal advice as to where they stand as people have been prosecuted in this kind of scenario before for doing that (binning them off and refusing to pay).

I can't get another quote from them until my insurance expires at the end of this month as their website says I've already got insurance with them.

Can you change your details slightly?

When i was hunting for insurance quotes based on different values, it was always annoying that they store your name, and then the previous quotes details. I used to keep the irrelevant stuff different - i.e. name 1 - Tom Jones, name 2 - Bob Jones. Same age/occupation/years driving etc.

Afterall you're only after a quote.

How is it cheeky? If the situation changes mid policy (car or address change) then the premium changes, so surely the addition of points is likely to change the premium mid term? Especially as the points were gained in Aug and the policy only started a month earlier, so that's as good as a year that should have been a higher rate, due to the points.

I'm sure the small print on the contract could be a good place to start. If that's got anything suggesting back payments are possible if, at a future date, your situation was found to be different to what was stated at the start of the contract. Just a thought.

"Usually" they don't put it up for points until renewal - though that isn't a hard and fast rule and will depend on terms and conditions.

It depends entirely on the terms and conditions. Many insurers do not load the premium for points until renewal.

Yea, avoid paying by DD. Use a card and pay yearly instead. That way you have more control over things.

Now its time to say "if I renew can we do something about the 1000 quid". So many people chose the least cost route with insurance and also treat it as a basic tick box exercise when really you need to own it and deal with it professionally. 1000 is mad money, my SP50 (now gone) I think added a fiver a month or something similar.

I'd be surprised if the insurer can't manage something like that going forward if taken up with them in that manner.

On their website is specifies informing them of any motoring convictions under "Tell us at renewal" rather than under the "tell us imediately" catagory.

I can't see why it would more than double for just the year so I will query it with them once they get back to me. I've just made a cheeky quote using slightly different details and it only increase ~£600.

Yea, you might have 'forgotten' for a couple of years, but now they demand an access code to your licence record.

So yea, hopefully you get done for insurance fraud.

An SP50 increases your quote by £600?!

My SP50 adds precisely nothing to my premium.....

nor do the other two SP30s
