Hi guys, guess the title says it all. I have a EVGA 980ti and have come into some money so my question is which gpu setup would give me the best performance. Getting a second 980ti to run them in sli or buying a 1080.

Cheers

1080. Less power, less heat, better driver optimisation and no worries about sli drivers, which can be quite poor.

The 1080 is more hassle-free than a sli setup but the 980 ti in sli will give more performance & cost less (assuming you buy the other one 2nd hand). I'd say the 1080 slightly edges it out unless you plan to watercool the GPUs.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

I can get a new EVGA 980ti FTW for about £375, which I thought was quite reasonable.

I've never tried sli before, is it really a big hassle to setup properly?

Cheers

Why would you pay nearly £400 for old tech when the 1070 is pretty much the same price??

Sell what you have and put the money towards a 1080.

Or if you must have sli, get 2x1070's.

You'll get a good price for your 980ti as people are still paying over the odds for them on the mm.

I would say just get the most powerful single GPU you can afford and forget about SLI.

We don't spend our lives running benchmarks ( although a few people seem to :D ). There's no point worrying about in which games SLI works or not. Just get one, problem solved, cheaper than 2 cards ( like 2 x 1070 for example ), works in every game.

SLi is easy to setup, just plug in a bridge and set sli in Nvidia panel, I ran sli for years on various GPU's and never had a problem.

But :) you'll hardly see any difference in Games, unless you an FPS fanatic or Benchmarker.

In the last couple of weeks I tried 1070's SLi but there was little change from a single 1070, Got a 1080, those are just not worth the money, so I'm back with a single 1070, and regret parting with my 980Ti SLi setup.

yeah what you say only reinforces my strong belief that if you run a 980TI SLI or single GPU, there's little point in getting a 1080. You could easily skip this generation and more than likely the next as well. Of course, a bit late for you but hey :)

Thank you very much for all this great advice, I think you've more or less talked me out of getting a second 980ti. In fact I may just stick with the single 980ti for now, it runs all the games I play very well so I think I'll put the money into other parts of my setup, maybe get a second ROG Swift monitor.

Once again, thanks, you've all been a great help.

You can get a pretty new used ones for less than that don't forget... Lots of people like me already have the 1080 FTW so are going to offload the old 980Ti FTW. Would be more like a £300 investment if you went that route, then if the 1080Ti is decent you can probably sell both and pay for most of the cost of the new anyway when those hit the market.

Honestly what can do the 1080 do that a good clocked 980 Ti can't do? I think for the price the 1080 is just for people who have to have the best out there though at current prices its nowhere near worth it
