390X vs 480/980

The 390x is pretty much on par with a gtx980 and slightly faster than the reference RX480. The AIB partner cooled RX480's should pretty much be around 390x performance.

The reason I asked is my mate is selling his MSI 390X for £150 and I'm thinking whether to get that or the AIB RX 480 to replace my 7850.

At £150 and with it being a mate i would go with the 390x. It should still have plenty of warranty left so if anything goes wrong he can RMA it for you. It was only a few months back these cards were over £300.

390X for that money. Is a steal and it will serve you well for long time especially if you overclock it and pa ir it with a freesync 2560x1440 monitor.

Does the 390X run hot as it is 275W TDP compare to RX 480 which is 175W TDP and probably similar in performance.

If I enable Vsync on mine it averages roughly 65-70 degrees depending on the game
I'm playing, a custom fan profile in Afterburner works wonders!

390X's run incredibly hot. Most of them are actually over 300W TDP, it's only the reference 390X's that are 275W (which are not available in the UK).

I'd pick the 480 over a 390X, if you value a quiet system and a cooler room.

Bear in mind I'm speaking from the experience of owning a MSI 390X for over a year. I replaced it with a 1070 FE, mainly due to the heat and noise. It's actual performance is great.

Is the 1070 a lot quieter? This is the only thing that bugs me about my 390X (I own the VTX3D triple fan) and the noise it generates even at lower temps is a bit much. I actually thought there was something wrong with it until I read a few reviews!

Depends which one you get.

The Palit GameRock and Jetstream range (both the same cooler, different plastic fascia) are practically inaudible.

Oh lord yes. I have the 1070, as I kinda like the design and prefer blower cards. At idle it's extremely quiet, and during gaming it's audible but a much lower pitch humming type sound.

In comparison my MSI 390X would also be very quiet at idle, then would go through the roof noise/heat wise during gaming.

I would have been able to put up with my 390X if at 1080P/60Hz, but once you go to a 1440P or 4K monitor with 100Hz+, it puts so much more stress on the card that the 390X really goes into rocket mode fan speed and pumps out a ton of heat. I undervolted it, which helped a little, though it was still far too loud IMO.

My 1070 FE is similar noise wise to my older AMD 7950 HIS IceQ, if that's any help for you.

Yeah I am just going to chime in as well for extra reassurance. I went from a 770 which honestly didn't get that hot and wasn't really that noisy to a 1070 (Msi Gaming X), and it's actually quieter which is something I wasn't expecting.

My CPU and case fans are now the loudest parts of the system.
