Buyers remorse

If I was feeling generous, i'd probably take £50 off for wasting your time. What's the point in a deposit if you're just going to give it back anyway? The whole point is that it covers your losses in the case of the other party pulling out (e.g. your time wasted, turning away other buyers etc.)

I'd be more annoyed that you made it completely clear it was non refundable but he's totally ignored it rather than about any time wasted, but then it really gets my goat when people ignore me.

I'd almost certainly say the insurance excuse is bull crap as well, who doesn't check that while car searching and especially before jumping on a train to view it!?

This is why when I sell things I always set the terms in a text message and wait for a response.

Once the terms are there and agreed to that's all she wrote. As Judge Judy says: You have a contract

I think you should give the money back but remind him that most people wouldn't.

If he gives you any lip, find out where he is and post it through his letterbox...and keep the money.

If you know how to handle yourself, tell him to do one.

Otherwise, do you really want to invite that sort of aggro to your home address?

If your buying a motor for less than a grand, you can't afford the insurance.... £100 is likely to be a lot to him.

Have you lost a sale in the mean time?

If not, give the money back.

The point of deposits isn't to screw people over. It is to cover any losses from reserving it.

I'm sure he'd be happy with a bank transfer which would take all of 5 minutes.

Remind him it was a non-returnable deposit, if he pleads ignorance then tell him to come and collect it.

I would give it back, I think it would be dishonest not to and even typed not-returnable profit before proofreading. That shows my trail on thought on it.

I'd just take some of it for fuel and time wasted but if he seemed like an okay person give most of it back. If you lost a sale because of keeping the car back I'd say no.
