Hi guys
Should I be able to record from Apple Music (the £10 a month one) to Minidisc?
Someone told me its illegeal? But how can it be? How is it a crime

Ta

because if you cancel your subscription you no longer have the right to access the music.
If you 'manage' to offload it onto another form of medium then you are circumventing their licence agreement

Some time last year I think they once again made it illegal to copy media from one format to another even when you own the media in another format.

So you can not rip a cd to mp3 for example.

or indeed what you suggest as you cannot copy it to a disc.

I like to copy my Blu rays and music to a central server so I can just leave the discs safely in there box.

That is now illegal even though I bought them.

It wasn't apple that made it illegal to do. Also all these home media centres with the movies stored so you can watch them easily are all illegal as well.

I wouldn't worry about it, just go ahead and rip it, they won't send in the swat team or anything, Does I tunes still not let you burn a song without jumping through hoops to get it to work.

The most questionable part of this whole enterprise is where you're getting a Minidisc player that still works.

But yeah, it's not really legal, in the same way that recording things from the radio is not legal. Recording on the TV is different assuming you're just time shifting, but if you're keeping a recording and watching it over and over then technically that's not OK.

That's not really comparable, though. There's a difference between transcoding when you own the media and copying when you are only paying for a license to use a service. The Apple Music service isn't intended for you to save music for later use and the agreement doesn't afford you that right. I can't see anyone caring, but that's the way it is.

It was also illegal to record our favorites from the Top 40 to tape on a Sunday afternoon. Did we do it? Of course we did.

You are of course correct I made the mistake of taking apple music as the same as buying from ITunes not realising it was a streaming service.

In this case of course it would be the same as recording from the likes of Netflix and of course is much more obviously wrong.

I have one myself. Can still get them on the 'Bay.
As a musician, I find them very useful for recording your performances via the mixing deck or with a clip-on mic, for example.

Keeping a recording is not OK?
But it's downloaded/saved to my Sky box hard drive - Am I supposed to delete it after a certain period, or something?

illegal to copy media from one format to another
What if I take a recorded show from the above-mentioned Sky Box and transfer it to watch on my PC, but *without* changing its format?

Maybe he was the guy I sold mine to last week :D

Still saddens me Minidisc failed, absolutely loved mine. If I could find a use I'd buy one now!
