Hi all

I'm after a spec for my brother in law. He needs only the tower. Can anyone help with a spec up please?

He needs an OS RJ45 and wifi but is trying to keep the cost down. He is looking at an SSD. What are they like these days? Hes starting a computer science degree in September so it will be used at uni.

Thanks for the help

You've gone another route already. I was looking AMD rather than intel to keep costs down even though intel are still better. Nice set up, but no case, windows or optical drive puts the brakes on this one.

There is a case in that build, and space to add a optical drive, of which costs about £15 from OcUK

It's possible to build this.

AMD Athlon X4 860K 3.7GHz Quad-Core Processor
Gigabyte GA-F2A68HM-HD2 Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard
Kingston HyperX Fury White 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Kingston HyperX Fury White 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Silicon Power Slim S55 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Asus Radeon R7 260 1GB DirectCU II Video Card
Fractal Design Core 1100 MicroATX Mini Tower Case
XFX XT 400W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
Samsung SH-118CB/BEBE DVD/CD Drive
TP-Link TG-3269 PCI 10/100/1000 Mbps Network Adapter

Morley's build is a no brainer. That CPU is fantastic.

Why would you go AMD / less power, when that fits the budget nicely?

You could try and find a second hand 2500k/3570k, a lot of selling now due to the 6500 and 6600k coming out that are finally upgrades worth while over the old i5s. I bet one wouldn't set you back more than 60-70 and would outperform any AMD and all the budget Intels.

people forgot the OS part lol.

while intel are better, to sort of get you started then this could be an option if buying new.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £304.56
(includes shipping: £11.70)

can get much better systems used, but new vs used is personal choice or you have 2 other options not particularly from this site which are a laptop or an all in one, hell if you went used you could get a mac of some sort.

do you need an i5 for a science degree?

Do you know what he wants it for at uni? Perhaps he wants to game a little, no idea why you'd spec an AMD cpu at all unless you know 100% his brother wants all new parts only. If it's purely for Uni work he'd be better off with a half decent spec used laptop.

I'd have no qualms over a used 2500k - I recycled mine from my main rig into my HTPC that's now downstairs and its still going - I think it's 9 years old and still flying, with about half of that under heavy overclock (4.4GHz IIRC???)

Intel it is, and I think I'll have to 'give him a going to uni prezzie' and buy him the OS myself

AMD Piledriver FX-4 Quad Core 4300 would require a video card. Missing RAM too.

Lol I must've click the X on ram by mistake. I assume that the processor I chose isn't a APU then? I sworn it said APU?? Anyways it was a suggestion from amd like op mentioned.

Are you that ignorant and uptight that you can't read people's post? Guess so.

The op stated amd for the build whether that's the best choice or not so I based round that assumption especially for £300(despite deleting the ram by mistake)and as a new purchase, the person requiring the computer might want to game, but 'gaming' and 'computer for uni' doesn't always mean the same thing now does it?

I know the i5 2500k are good still, but unless the person wants old or least want to hunt round for that processor then going gospel over it is stupid, you don't know any more about the needs than me and there's more appropriate processors out there.

I would go for something like this. Windows 10 keys can be had for around £20.00 if you shop around.

Ideally you would get a 240gb ssd minimum but a 120gb should do the OS plus a bit of storage.

edit: a used 2500k build would be ace also.
