Is this the most specific question in GD ever?

Here we go.

My wife owns a house in South Africa with her brother and sister, 1/3rd of the house each. Her sister is now wanting to buy my wife and her brother out, which is all good and dandy, but the lawyers dealing with it all are asking for my passport? What the hell? Something about Fica documents?

I'll write out this whole process once we'ev got the cash but this is truly a story worthy of GD fame.

I heard about this happening to a guy before. It didn't end well for him.

My advice would be to make sure to feed a bit of your dinner to the kids before you eat any.

I don't have kids :D

I just don't understand why the hell they'd want my passport. Then again this does seem to be a seriously rubbish mickey mouse legal firm, they even sent prior documents to Cornwall, we live in London.

FICA is designed to help prevent money laundering, it obligates banks to obtain sound proof of identity for customers sending or receiving large sums of money. If the conveyance is between your wife and her sister, and you are not on the deeds or land registry documents of the house in SA, I do not see why you would need to be party to the transaction at all. *Unless* you have a joint bank account with your wife into which the proceeds of the house share sale will be transferred. HTH.

Could it be something so staggeringly simple as you having a joint bank account with your wife or something. Knowing the OPs history of struggling with ordinary day-to-day events for normal adults it probably is just that.

They'll hold your passport until you can prove that any ill-gotten gains in your bank account don't come from dodgy deals.

Well, I appreciate your confidence in me being able to smell what the motives could be and yes, we do have a joint account but there's physically no way they could know that and the money's going in to a separate account.

We have a confession!

Bravo team. Move in!!

Òh right, that. Yeah I even thought twice about it but was in a hurry so left it :D

Good shout though.
