I know we've got a few avgeeks on here. Looks like a 777 has crashed at Dubai.

BBC News link

Mixed reports of a gear collapse or gear-up landing. No 7700 squawk, no holding before landing. Also, the damage doesn't look the same as the BA 777 at Heathrow where it's ripped through the wing. Picture of the plane after crash, cabin breached by fire. It's 49C on the ground at DXB currently - that + fire sounds like absolute hell.

Wow, one look at that picture and I assumed there must have been fatalities. Glad to hear there aren't!

Reports of on-board fire before landing, so probably a case of get on the ground asap, otherwise it could've ended up like SwissAir 111 :(

Isn't SOP for gear-up landings to cover the runway in foam and orbit the airport jettisoning fuel first?

Yes it is. WX report: OMDB 030900Z 11021KT 3000 BLDU NSC 49/07 Q0993 WS ALL RWY TEMPO 35015KT 1500

Reported windshear on all runways (WS ALL RWY, going from 110/21 to 350/15) so this casual observer suggests windshear resulting in extremely hard landing.

Reporting on Talksport that it caught fire in mid air. Worrying, if true.
