Hi all,

Thinking of picking up a MK5 Golf GTI - I know that the extra 20-30 BHP is worth it from the standard version - but is it possible to get the same performance upgrade out of the original with a little modification/map?

Not sure if its worth spending the extra for an edition 30 if I can get the same or more with some careful choice modifications.

Thanks

Walkerie

I believe the ED30 has a different turbo fitted which can easily be mapped to 300bhp.

A standard GTI should make 240iah from a remap easily.

Edition 30 has the k04 turbo which maps to near 300bhp at stage 1.

You'll struggle to get 300 out of a stage 3 k03. Stage 1 should see the k03 reach the edition 30 stock without any supporting mods.

Look at the S3 of the same age too, quattro will help with the extra ponies.

Woah, a Revo map on a K03 GTI goes up to 260ps whilst the K04 which I guess is the ED30 goes up to 315ps.

Funnily enough, I just looked at an ED30 today.

The ED30 or Pirelli are the ones to go for. Basically an 8P S3 engine in there, which means upto around 350 BHP can be had from relatively simple tuning (exhaust, intake, remap. High Pressure Fuel Pump for maximum 360 BHP or so). Whereas the normal GTI requires the K04 turbo & injectors on top too. APR do a K04 kit for the GTI though, at £2574 including the mapping, should you want to go down that route. But you will still need the HPFP and some K04 injectors on top of that, so probably looking a bit over £3k all in to get the same performance out of a normal GTI, as you would from a stage 2+ ED30. In the end, if your wanting the same sort of power out of a sorted GTI as a sorted ED30, then all in it'll probably cost similar overall. However, the ED30 will be worth more after all said and done.

Of course, that's assuming tuning is of interest to you. Or if you want to even take it that far. As said above, a simple remap on a GTI will be more powerful than a standard ED30, but then again, a simple remap on the ED30 gives you FAR more again.

If not interested in tuning, the ED30 is still the one to go for really. A bit more power, and whilst it will be more expensive to buy, it will be worth more on the other end too. Anniversary Edition Golfs are ALWAYS worth more than regular GTI's. The Pirelli too, because it was so rare.

The Pirelli edition only really exists because ED30 owners were upset that their cars weren't numbered, like the 25th Anni versions were. And so eventually VW stopped making the ED30, and owners could apply for numbered plaques for their cars. Then VW brought out the Pirelli, which was basically an ED30 underneath, but different wheels and trim (I believe), but not numbered. But as it was so close to the end of the mk5's life cycle, there were very few of them made, and are, I believe, even rarer than the ED30. And a bit newer (2008+ usually).

The S3 is also worth a look, but they are at least a couple grand more expensive, often with a more basic spec (although full leather is more popular on them). And, to my eyes at least, not as nice looking as an ED30. Quattro is nice, but then that costs in fuel economy (not that that should really be a consideration with these), and it saps a bit of power (i.e. once moving, the ED30 should be slightly faster, although the quattro will obviously help off the line and such).

The ED30 I was in today had an induction kit, and cat-back Miltek, as well as H&R springs. It wasn't overly noisy, and sounded pretty decent. Gave a decent kick when booted, so was pleasantly surprised by that. I don't think it was remapped, as it was about as quick as my 530d, but it delivered the power / torque in a much nicer manner (obviously). IF I go for it, I will, for sure, be looking for at least a remap on top of existing mods.

What about the R32 OP(Assuming cost isn't in question)? 250 BHP, AWD with a V6, which sounds much better than a 4 cylinder turbo imo.

As a few others have mentioned, make sure you have a good look around the wheel arches and driver/passenger door sills as that's where rust is most common. I just got rid of mine and the rust on the driver side door sill was getting worse, and I could see rust starting to bubble through the wheel arches.

The issue with an R32 is the noise is just about the only better thing. Ever so slightly faster before a remap but heavier and thirstier. 4WD too I guess but that's maybe an advantage five days a year.

My thinking entirely. They are a bit boring really.

I was considering one though. But they would only excite me if I supercharged it really. And even then, after spending £5k on that route, it would only be as powerful as a stage 2+ ED30. Although an ED30 would probably cost around £2k to get there.

R32's are more to buy also than the ED30, for the most part. But can come with some pretty decent spec, like those recaro buckets for example. They are awesome. I would also argue they are a bit nicer looking too though.

But as standard, they aren't particularly quick, and are particularly thirsty for it. Sound awesome though, but nowhere near as "fun" as a GTI or ED30 etc...

I'd be after a pirelli edition just for the cool seats :p

Yes I love those seats.

Pirelli edition or ED30 would be my choice if looking for a mk5 Golf GTI. Look for a good spec, dsg (if you want), NAV/media player etc.

I should have bought my friends one a few years back in about 2010/2011. Think he ended up part ex'ing it for £13k in the end. Bargain back then. Shame I was like 19 and insurance would have been £2.5k +.

A good condition pirelli is hard to find now though.

Some pics because why not:

Read rules regards images sizes - RJC.

What is the ED30 like to drive? Is there much feedback/feel and if not, is it possible tonget good feel with a few tweaks?

Shark Performance map on my GTI took it to 250BHP/300 torque which is more than plenty. Rust on front wings can happen but just had my right one replaced for free by VW under warranty.

The VW RNS-510 is a good head unit to get as well btw.

ED30 is the one to go for but a lot of MK5s are starting to suffer from rust. Mainly the front wings but sill, rear arches and boot lids are also affected.

They did this pretty much from day one!

I nearly bought a Pirelli a few years ago but it was in terrible condition so I walked away. I loved those seats and the yellow detailing though.
