Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Sorry to spam this again, but the answer to screen flickering was to select the SLI mode rather than leave it to auto. Maybe it's an SLI noob thing on my part, but on the previous build, everything was fine without faffing around in the Nvidia control panel.

Such a drama every time with these updates.. I am trying to apply it to 3 PCs, one would only take using Media Creation Tool, my HTPC worked via Windows update (although Kodi will now not run), and for my main desktop I have installed it 3 times via the direct download .exe but after restarting I am still on 10586.. this last one is particularly baffling. I may have to try the MCT route there too.

I've noticed something pretty cool, if Windows restarts with pending updates (whether manually from the power button, or automatically as per active schedule), then any open applications will re-open upon logging back in.

This is a really good feature, and I was a bit bummed to hear MS will force restart machines after updates are installed, as I have a specific set of programs I usually have open (Lightroom etc).

I've also noticed automatic tokenised logon for instances where Windows auto restarts after an update.

So far then, the smaller pros add up to outweigh the cons I'd say. It's just that little bit more polished than before.

Dark mode needs a complete revamp. It is merely 20% finished, as it only applies itself to Windows App applications and screens, not standard apps, like Windows Explorer or dialogue boxes and context menus

That is fine if you have programs open that aren't active - not so good if you have ongoing tasks that MS doesn't see as "activity". Yet another horrid partial workaround for a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place.

Last night it download fine but then failed to "prepair" for installtion 3 times.

When it did install (it was not 11:00 at night) some my task bar short cuts where gone and the only programs listed at all in the the metro ones! very few things started etc. after much digging I found a powershell command which restored non metro apps to the start button program list.

I'm still without all the other Start button stuff that was there before (metro tiles, recently used programs etc) any ideas ?

you can always delay the updates to avoid interruption of work no ?
(pro&home metered connection/notify me/ NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers key )

I am surprised they are letting folks roll-back the Anniversary Update, I thought this was a patch and could not refuse it unless you wanted to stop all updates from now on.
Normally you would roll back such a patch by utilizing an older restore point, but I guess that is deprecated now (did it even auto-save one?)
Provision of a windows.old makes it see like the equivalent of a major (like sp1 in 7) update - so it is that ?

Finally upgraded via the MCT and it all looked like it it went ok, yet I am still on 1511.. lol. I guess I will wait an try in a few weeks.

That happened to me but worked fine the next day when I tried again on my laptop, I would also suggest use a Microsoft media creation tool USB and try it on that.

I keep that as a spare for the future reinstalls of 10, also I gave it to my brother and his 10 upgraded fine to the latest version with the USB media creation tool.

You can get it from here https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 .

3D modelling. Rendering scenes, rendering animations for hours...

Does the MS media creation tool now offer an ISO of the new build of you use it to create a bootable stick....?

Edit My bad, it has been confirmed to do so. Thanks

This seems scary, need to appraise it before I update to anniversary on dual boot 7/10 disk
(although reported with linux dual it is unclear if it might also impact a dual 7/10 )

Windows 10 Anniversary Update may affect and even delete other partitions on the same disk, OMGUbuntu is reporting, citing several complaints by users. "Broken boot loaders on an update are one thing but losing data, even entire partitions?" asks the author. Microsoft-centric news blog WindowsReport is corroborating on the report, adding that in some cases, the new OS was not able to detect some partitions. It says (edited):
Many users are reporting that some of their partitions disappeared after installing the Anniversary Update. Usually, it's the smallest partition that disappears, although we couldn't say for sure whether the partition is deleted or if Windows simply doesn't detect it. Some users are saying that the partition is not allocated, while others can detect it once they install third-party partition management applications.
We have reached out to Microsoft for clarification, and will update the post when we hear back from them.
