Morning,

haven't been on here since building my machine in 2012 and I'm feeling a little lost!

Very casual gamer but wouldn't mind playing some circa 2014 games at reasonably high settings (such as dragon age 3, dark souls 2) and I think my GPU is letting me down.

Got an i5-2500K CPU and 650w PSU along with a 2GB 6950.

What can I get (2nd hand or new) for under £100 that would be a decent upgrade?

Thanks in advance

Is your 2500k overclocked? If not I'd give that a good bump up since there is a lot of free performance to be had with the 2500k. Around the £100 you can get a 7970ghz which would be a nice upgrade though if you could stretch your budget another £40 or so give or take and shop around you can find a Radeon r9 290 or gtx 970 night be a little harder to find 970 then 290 at those prices but yea thats what I would recommend

Those prices are high Tommy. 290s have gone for £110, even MSI Lightning Editions!

Also the 7950 is about £60 on the MM, so the 7970 should be no more than £75 ish.

The 380 sells for £85.

Prices will depend where the OP is buying from, he doesn't personally have access to MM.

Can you confirm if your cpu is overclocked? Are you happy with 2nd hand cards?

Yep, don't have MM access and unlikely to feel the need to post 995 more times in the near future if I'm honest...

Happy with 2nd hand from well known auction site or AN Other.

CPU isn't overclocked but I'll do so this weekend.

Thanks for the recommendations so far chaps, I'll keep an eye out.

How far away from Liverpool do you live? Theres one going for 120 gumtree ono which around 105 would seem reasonable and should get a sale

Do a Google search for an overclocking guide for your chip then have a go, if you have any issues post in the overclocking section and you'll get help.

Check on auction site and local ads, but an AMD 290 or above would be a good shout or an Nvidia 780 or above. The 290 has more Vram ;)

Wilco, thanks guys. Haven't overclocked before but it looks pretty doable, I'm fairly happy tinkering with BIOS (famous last words...)

I'm in Birmingham but I'll keep an eye out for R9 290, 7970, Nvidia 780/970.

Personally I wouldn't touch a Kepler card, I wouldn't go with a 970 either, It seems you want a card that will last and I'm not saying cards like the 780 & 970 won't last but I do think you'll be better off with something like a 290 if you can find one. Do not go reference though.

Should be able to get a second hand 290x for £100. £70 if you manage to get £30 for the 6950. That would be an awesome upgrade.

Just know you will go a lot further going second hand with 100 quid than brand new. A lot further.
