Fire kills 13 at a French bar

""The group was unable to leave the basement and most of the victims died of asphyxiation."

HOW can this be the case that they were unable to leave? That is absurd. I see potential criminal charges being brought against the owner if this is proven to be true. Unless it means the gas came on so quickly they were unable to move. Clarification needed from the journalist.

Poor people.

I heard someone on radio 5 live this morning say that some of people died because they were hiding? I didn't understand why people would be hiding, and that there were no exits except the main one.

I am pretty sure it was from one of the witnesses, not much more clear news on it yet though.

Tragic story, local radio news suggested the fire started after someone carrying the candled cake tripped over.

Seems a bit odd to use material that does this. Surely there is a way of soundproofing that doesn't release toxic gas.

I bet the 'sound proofing' was those foam acoustic tiles that are for improving acoustics. Proper soundproofing materials like dense rockwool installed properly wouldn't have caused an issue with a dropped birthday cake.

Obviously I don't know the facts, but there have been instances where evacuation has stalled purely on congestion at the exits. One high profile example is https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Station_nightclub_fire

RIP :(

I watched a video of that. The guy films an exit where people are stuck in the doorway due to congestion, he leaves for a moment to check around the back, and by the time he comes back that same front entrance is completely engulfed in flames. The whole building was on fire in moments.

It's pretty shocking really. I use it when delivering fire safety training.
