wondering what the best routers for BT Fibre are

currently have a Zyxel VMG 1312 B10D which came 'free' from Zen

not really sure what advantages a different router would have but apparently this router isn't too good, I know the BT Homehub is rated better than it is. it's certainly a bit hit and miss when changing settings with no confirmation that it has restarted/updated, hanging on the 'restart' screen etc

I wouldn't replace a router just because the setup is a bit dodgy. It isn't something you should need to mess with very often.

Are there features you need that are either missing or don't work as well as you'd like?

things like ping/traceroute don't work, would like to be able to mess about with stability adjustment like I had on an Asus N55U. Not sure if that's even possible with fibre?

I can't even access the router's interface without restarting it

If the router is that screwed have you contacted Zen? You're paying a premium for better customer service so you may as well see what they'll do for you.

AFAIK there's very little, or no, tweaking available for FTTC connections.

What's your budget?

What features do you want beyond it just working properly?

Do you want an all in one, or discrete devices?

I use an Asus RT56-AC with my Infinity connection and it works fine. Note that I have a modem. I understand the newer Infinity connections plug straight into the Homehub with no need for a modem. If that's the case with you then you'll need to be careful that new router supports such connections.

not contacted them, even if everything worked it still feels slow and clumsy....when you view the line stats it messes up the rows and columns so nothing is in line, things like that!

all in one...I have an Asus N55U from when I had standard broadband but it's ADSL only, I'd be happy with the fibre equivalent of that probably, something in that kinda range

budget about £100, I think the N55U was about that a good few years ago tho
I see the N66U is about £80 and the AC68U is £150 - what's the big differences?

mainly I want it so I can get the best chance of getting a good solid/fast connection

If you still have the N55U you've got a cheap option available.

Get hold of a second hand Openreach HG612 VDSL modem (usually under £25, often significantly less) and configure the N55U into EWAN mode.

If you can live without wireless AC the N55U is a good solid router.

Don't get hung-up on monitoring VDSL line stats as there's bugger all you can do with them. If you have a HG612 the line stats are available if you really care.

thanks

not sure if I'd benefit from wireless ac - I have an ipad air 2 that I use with apple TV but I think it's just the ipad that supports ac
