I'm due an upgrade this autumn, although I'll probably buy a handset outright as it's usually my preferred option. Looking to replace my 2 year old Z3 compact but pretty undecided on what to get this time round.

I'm sure the new iPhone isn't the only show in town this autumn. What are you all awaiting in terms of spec details, or have you made your mind up what you will be going for?

Had a Z3 for 2 years myself, opting for Note 7. Not much bigger than Z3 plenty of under the hood upgrade and has the screen real estate im after. Also never had a note so thought I'd give it a whirl. Next on the list would have been an S7 Edge

He has Z3 Compact. Noe 7 is about twice the size. :D

Nexus phones will be out in Sept/ Oct and I'm guessing Sony will release something as well.

I'm waiting for new Nexus to replace my current Nexus 5 I got on release.

They don't, not sure about new ones but probably won't either. I have unlimited data so lack of SD card didn't bother me, I have 4 or 5 albums saved on it for the rare occasion I can't stream spotify. Pictures automatically upload to cloud so I can always delete some if needed.
I used USB on the go few times, phone needed to be rooted but haven't had a need for it for ages.

Am I right in saying that current Nexus phones don't have SD card capability? I'm sure that put me off them in the past.
To be honest, with a lot of mid/high-end phones sporting at least 32/64GB I don't see the need for SD cards anymore. I have an absolute ton of albums on my 64GB OPO and I still can't fill it up.

Agreed. SD cards are more of a liability than a real benefit unless you need to take a lot of high res video.
Unreliable and slow your phone down in my experience!

Actually with the new cameras I am finding I am filling up space quicker than usual.
Especially those awesome panoramic shots.

If you like video.. I would say a sd card is essential. If not, a nice addition.
But if a phone provides 64gb and no sd card. I would be fine

As specs seem unimportant now I'd still chose my galaxy s7E
And I'd still buy it second hand off MM here

iPhone would be massively expensive on start and unless you have a big spend monthly, providers less likely will be giving it for free (45+ area maybe)
In Autumn there will be something else behind the corner (Nexus, LG V20 and Please Note 7 without curved LCD :P) and before you know it S8 rumors will start ....Seems like the last st of top of the range phones does not offer massive jump so I dont expect that the next series would do the same ....
Now will by all the hype about the Iris scanner (even if you are going to use it 2 :P or as a party trick heh ....double camera and VR....) Not sure that they are so stubborn about giving extra 1mm thickness and pack 500mA more to the battery :((
Ohhh and curved screens ! :) forgot about them ...although I am not the fan as the protectors having a hard time covering the whole edge to edge ....and operating with one hand could from time to time activate options you don't need.
I have S4 ...its battery is not the best anymore and had to change the LCD as the door to my car squashed the ^&* out of the original one :P.. but does most of the things I need. Thought..S6 but battery was not to my liking, had Nexus 6 and had to send it back due to the screen issues and now thinking if there will be 5.5 with 4000mA and good camera I will go for it (I know that there are Xiaomi and Meizu etcbut problem with Band 20 4g makes it less interesting for me - and I had enough of playing with rooting, upgrading, messing with firmware to get it working)

I have a huawei p9 and it's pretty nice.

Pros/cons: it's fast but not quite as fast as the lasted flagships (lg g5, s7, moto z, htc one. Basically anything with SD820). Great build quality. Fast finger scanner. Quality screen (although only full hd). Largish battery, especially for a thin phone. Speaker is decent but not amazing. Camera is really good but low light performance isn't as good as s7 or iphone from what I understand.

Reviews I have seen or read often say that there are no deal breakers with this phone except maybe the price (launched @ £450) and that it's a good phone.

Subjectively I think the p9 is beautiful, maybe too beautiful since I'm often worried about damaging it. It's made from aluminium and glass. I bought a case but I don't really want to use it. Having only had cheap android phones in the past, this one's camera was a revelation to me compared to those.

The worst thing about it is the emui 4.1 skin because it has a few bugs. Lastpass for example needs the accessibility option is settings to be on or it can't insert passwords into chrome and emui keeps turning accessibility off for some reason, so I copy/paste them from the app instead (*update* turning 'ignore optimizations' in setting fixed this). Some apps, like firefox, won't stay running in the background for more than about 16 minutes no matter if setting are set to keep it running. I use it for listening to youtube with the screen off, since firefox allows it. I've ended up using tasker to open firefox every 15 minutes automatically, on/off via a widget, to stop it getting closed by emui.

Another bad thing is that all icons have ugly borders by default but that's changed easily enough.

I think you should wait to see what the new iphone brings and unless it blows you away you could consider the s7 and htc one. But if you can get a good deal or just like it's build/looks (like me), the p9 might be worth checking out. Android 7 with emui 5 are on the way so maybe those bugs will get fixed. I certainly hope so :p

I've personally never had any issues with sd cards. And wouldn't say no to one.

There's always going to be people that never have issues and well done for being lucky. I've had three fail on me since being an android user and I'm not alone.

The new iPhone looks like it'll be the old iPhone with a pointless camera lens added, so it's ruled out. I can't bring myself to buy a Samsung because the design is meh, particularly the curved edge screen.

I'll get a look at the new Google phones, but it's looking likely that I may opt to keep the Z3c for a third year.

Is it just me, or are mobile phones hitting a ceiling in terms of innovation and reasons to upgrade?

You're just getting old and sensible ;)
