Hi -

I got the 5930K cpu so I could utilise the 40 lanes having now just added a second graphic card. but even having fitted water blocks, I had to put the 2nd card in the No. 4 pci-e slot as it was all just too tight. The manual says to use the no. 3 slot to utilise the full 40 lanes, so is there anyway to change the lanes in bios or something? I see an option for auto/gen 1/gen 2 under the PCH setting in bios but I do not know if that will do it. any help appreciated.

thanks.

maybe this will explain as to why when i put my 980ti in slot 4 the other day to try take some heat away from the CPU i lost 3000 points on firestrike extreme.

Could you post a picture? I don't see why you would have to go to the 4th slot as that's a big gap, although I appreciate I may be missing something obvious.

found this in the manual http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb...WEB.pdf?_ga=1.158127866.1378676747.1470520121

How many SSD's do you have?

manaully also says it should be slot 1 and slot 3 used for a sli configuration

This is why I can't see how it has to be slot 4. Slot 3 offers plenty space and slot 4 doesn't provide that much extra over 3.

it tells you in depth in the manual something to do with how the lanes are configured going through some controller thingy

No, what I meant was why he had to have his card in slot 4. Sorry, it wasn't clear in my post.

i did wonder myself i'm staring at mine now and there is plenty of room as it's 1 whole pci-e spacing

would probably help if the OP put up some pics of his space problem.

On some of the more feature rich boards these compromises are needed. Although it's not really an issue as there is plenty of bandwidth at the lower lane speed.

He's went for a 40 lane CPU specifically for SLI, so x16/x16 is pretty much a must else he's wasted a few Bob.

Hopefully he'll put us out or suspense soon with a wee photo. :p

Hi guys - thanks for the replies. The 2nd card did fit into the pci-e 3 slot (as whyscotty shows above) but I've got bitspower compression fittings and the barbs on the opposing cards for the serial alignment were literally touching each other leaving me no room to fit the tubing over. i was surprised at how tight it all is though. and then I found that the sli switch is right behind the pci-e 4 slot which the 2nd card was blocking ! i'll try and post a photo tonight so you can double-check. can anyone post up a link for an alternative fitting to connect the two cards ?? thanks
