Overwatch

I think you would be very surprised then infact how close those matches would be. If they were randomly picked teams, I am very confident.

Up untill high 60's into the 70's and beyond it is all about the grind and there are people of rank 40 far better than those ranked 60. That is it.
Link your stats. That would help prove your point.

As the moment you're coming across pretty salty that you play on two accounts and one of them you've even been terribly unlucky and under ranked... Or conversely been carried and are over ranked. :p

Considering that the 70 and above is the top 3% too.. Where do you actually rate people to be "better than average"?

I've gone from several weeks of going up and down between ranks 48 - 50 to going up and down between 49 - 53... Perhaps a small improvement? Although frankly the games that go well (even when I am solo) are always the ones where people have mics and we're at least making an effort to co-ordinate, and the games that go very badly are always the ones where the only communication in the team is salt and nobody seems to understand how to work together...

That sort of leads me to believe that "my" rank is largely in the hands of the team I end up on... but I'm trying to just focus on how I performed, I try to co-ordinate and will always switch to counter what the enemy team are doing. I figure eventually I will get enough good games stacking up to climb a little higher (or maybe just do better next season!)

You are right in thinking that eventually over a long period of time and games in theory you would slowly increase if you perform consistently well getting gold being as you're in control of 1/6 of your own team. The problem with the system however, is that by the placement system rewarding you as an individual and not much on win/loss, you can quickly find yourself unable to progress much past your placement score as the skill rank becomes more about luck in who the matchmaking picks for you. This part reversal in how your skill rank is decided doesn't make sense. Next season, I reckon I could comfortably place at 56, yet if I were to be defaulted to 50 to start with, I'd really struggle to attain that ranking even after triple the amount of games. Perhaps you're better off being reliant on yourself and placing high then not bothering at all after 10 games and reverting to quick play only.

I think you're overestimating how much individual performance mattered during placements Drollic. I did extremely well, getting 2-3 golds every single game but I got placed rank 50 because I only went 3-7.

My friend who averaged far few gold medals per game went 9-1 and got placed 64, which was way too high for him since he's only just climbing back up 57-59 now after 2 months. He dropped right down to 50 straight away after placements.

I mean my placements didn't go great but I think I was something like 4 wins to 6 from memory... played reasonably well in some games, some went badly... some I was support the whole game... Got placed at 48 I think, dipped as low as 42 then climbed back up to the ~48-50 range for a while as I mentioned, then climbed to 53 during a period of a lot of what felt like good games (not all wins either, but the games all felt tense and close) and have hovered around a bit but basically dropped like a stone the last few nights back to 49...

I tend to pick one of Zarya, Zen, Roadhog, Reaper or Lucio if I pick before the others... but if I'm not one of the first to pick I go for whatever it seems like the team is lacking. Then during the round I'm quite happy to switch; I can play most of the heroes and will try to identify what is causing the team the most trouble and counter it... I also try to get on the mic at the start of every game, try to co-ordinate, make callouts, stay positive etc. What more can I do? :p

I know Quick Play exists but somehow to me it just feels... not pointless... but just not as fulfilling - I want a serious challenge to rise to and improve, the only time I'll go in QP is if I literally don't have time to play a full competitive match, or I want to practice a hero I'm less good with

Lets say it's entirely on your team performance, not you individually. Lets say you get put in a team with 3 idiots. If you're an idiot too, that makes 4. If you're not, 3. You have a better chance of winning with 3. Over enough games, having 1 less idiot in your team (you) should make a difference, no?

Well, yes, sort of. If you have bad luck games and good luck games (in terms of team mates), then you will see variation in the short term but should always come back to the same point in the longer term.

I think the problem is that people see this extreme variation over about 10-20 games, whereas the system SHOULD be accurate on average over ~100 or more games.

Given the length of the 'season' and the frequency of play, this means any given player could spend a fair portion of that time in the 'bad luck' low rank doldrums, which doesn't feel great.

I've always thought of it this way, but a "bad team" is one you just weren't good enough to carry. If you played better that game then you would've won, despite having a "bad team". Maybe it's why I've always preferred soloq (in League etc as well) because I don't blame my team, so them playing badly doesn't bother me.

There's only so much carrying you can do at times though Scott unless you're well above the rank you're currently at and more than likely play genji, mcree or tracer. I can't think why anyone wouldn't want to see the skill rating based off your own performance (a mixture of measures that take into account hero choice) plus say between 40-60% based upon if you win or loose. If you're on the loosing team and it's not even close no matter how you play, there's little incentive for anyone to try and play any better as it stands. Adopting the above system would eliminate a lot of these types of games and the annoyance as you could do well, get multiple gold and only loose a small amount of skill rating.

In a team of 6 players, to carry 5 of them isn't just your better than your ranking, surely you're far far far better than your ranking?

Just got this on an impulse buy and I've spent the past 2 hours enjoying the insanity. It's not quite TF2 on my love graph but it's a hella'lot of fun. The amount of characters was initially abit overwhelming. Really enjoy playing Tracer and just had some good round as bootleg demoman after realising that Tracer was not going to work for our team against the opposition roles and the one turret that was killing us all. Switch to demoman and swiftly took it out.

Hi all, long time lurker on the forums here, just wanted to share some news and hopefully grab a few votes if possible. I have been selected to represent the UK in the Overwatch World Cup and have a confirmation email that tells me I am going through to the voting stage.

Blizzard will soon be opening voting for people who own Overwatch. I would be immensely grateful if you would consider giving me your vote if you live in the UK. I will do a follow up post with the link when I have received it.

I'm 28 years old from Manchester but living in Cornwall, where I work as an Aircraft Engineer in the Royal Navy. PC builds and computer games have always been my passion and I would be so chuffed to have the opportunity to take part in this tournament.

I will be streaming as much as I can (although I have guests for a few days) over @ twitch.tv/Nugsy88 . I mostly play Roadhog/Zarya/Soldier 76 but fill on any team role which is required. In game name is Nugz and I'm rank 79.

Thanks!

I'm voting for the shelf stacker who plays constantly with the lowest possible entry rank :)

No offense but I don't know why anyone would vote for someone with literally one post over Valkia who actively posts on these forums. Sorry mate, maybe if you contributed more.

Surely if you had half a brian you would search the thread at least see if anyone else in these forums had been asked to enter this tournament; though call me a funny ******, you know dam well. lol

I totally understand what you're saying, and I'm not meaning to step on anyone's toes.. the thing is that on the voting form you are required to vote for four people before you can submit it.

Best of luck to Valkia.
