Hey all,

A few mates and I are gonna do a mini road trip to Wales (no idea where yet; open to suggestion) and possibly Birmingham over the bank holiday weekend so could do with a few recommendations in, around or on route to said destinations for good places to eat. Nothing too expensive.

Also, if you have any recommendations about stuff to do/see in each place. We haven't planned anything at all yet so anything is on the cards. I'd probably say we're an active bunch so would prefer a hike to sights or whatever over a museum. I've got an interest in photography so any good spots for taking photos is always welcome (I'll probably ask in photography section separately anyway).

Thanks!

The Stable is pretty decent in Bristol. This is if you like pizza and cider.

Pizzas are good and the cider selection is amazing.

Just avoid the little cup of Dorset Naga on the side to go with your pizza. Unless you're mental.

Oh sorry, we'll be leaving from Bristol to Wales. I added it in in case there was anything good on route.

Having said that, I've never had a pizza from there but I always hear that it's good!

Where are you staying in Birmingham and what do you want to eat? What is your budget approximately? How many meals will you be having there? Birmingham is actually very good for restaurants but they're not always obvious - you have to do a bit of searching!

Curry is the obvious choice of course and I can recommend many places depending on budget.

In Birmingham probably near city centre ish. As said we haven't made any plans yet so any hidden gems we wouldn't mind travelling to probably (within reason).

I think our rough plan is Saturday morning drive to Wales and stay over, then Sunday morning drive to Birmingham and spend the day and come back in the evening.
So I guess 3/4 meals at each place? Budget I guess anything up to £20 per sit down? But closer to £10-15 for the majority would be nice.

I understand, that Rhyl is superb for food

Oh maybe a bit further up than we're probably looking at, as we are heading to Birmingham after. I could mention it and see what they say though. Thanks.

Good curry for dinner would be either Rajdoot in the jewellery quarter or Purnima (bit further away from the centre). Hen and Chickens is good also, but it's basically a slightly rough round the edges pub that serves curry. This is the cheaper option.

Sunday lunch is good at either The Plough in Harborne (booking advised) or dim sum at Shanghai Shanghai in Arcadian in the centre. The red lion in the jewellery quarter is a good shout too. It'll all depend on where you want to base yourself. There are lots of places in brindley place and in the mailbox/the cube worth looking at if you're shopping centrally.

Oh, also pretty much anywhere on the Ladypool Road that takes your fancy for a curry. There's also pretty good Turkish and grill restaurants there too. The road isn't exactly paved with gold, but it's a great experience.

Sounds perfect for my neck of woods!

A quick recommendation would be to head towards the Brecon Beacons from Bristol, maybe taking a hike up one of the Pen y fan routes (There's plenty to pick from like this one) then depending on whether you want secluded or town based for the night...

For a more rural visit: Head up over the mountain road towards the small farming/mining village of Penderyn and go to Caradog's restaurant in the Ty Newydd Hotel. Secluded country house with top quality food and a good bar, also for the day after you've got the Penderyn whiskey distillery about a mile away from the hotel which does cracking tours! or you could head over to Aberdare to sample some of the outstanding Greytrees Beer!

Or

For a bit more central: Head back across the valleys road to Merthyr Tydful and go to JOL's for fine dining (Jamie o'Leary is the chef there worked with Stephen Terry in the Hardwick, genuinely fantastic food) or the awesome Mango House Indian and Bengali for great curry and their utterly ridiculous Naan bread which comes with it's own fold out table . There's a travelodge, a load of pubs and a few clubs in Merthyr town but I'd recommend the pub just down from Jol's there called The Crown which has a good atmosphere and bands playing over the weekend. There's also Bike Park Wales there if you're into throwing yourself down mountains on a bike!!

Let me know if those restaurants look a little pricey or if you're after anything specific and I'll see if I can help, got a pretty good knowledge of places to grub across South Wales :)

Great... now I'm hungry :|

In the centre of Brum over the last few years as long as you avoid the general cheap chain pub type food then I've found it's pretty difficult to eat something you'd say was rubbish.

My favourite is Andersons Bar and Grill on St Martin's Square though, brilliant steak, well priced and plenty of pubs/bars around to grab a drink or 2 afterwards.

Akbar's is my go to place for curry in Birmingham. Very tasty food. If you're hungry order a family nan. They're enormous!

Akbars has gone down hill in recent years imo.

My favs are

Mughal E Azam (stratford road)
La Favorita - Italian/Indian (ladypool road)
Al Bader - Lebanese (Ladypool road)
Antep cuisine - Turkish (ladypool road)
Semedo's - jewellery QTR
Ciello - Italian (Brindley Place)

And finally, try Eis cafe (coventry road) for some coffee and deserts.
