Console Advice Please (Children's Present)

Ok so it sounds like an XBox One is the way to go then. Thanks.

So aside from the Lego games with are on the shopping list already, can anyone recommend any other good starters to go for? I'm thinking simple/arcade driving games with plenty of opportunity for "spectacular" crashes, and anything else you can think of, no shooters though, both too young for that.

P.S

I assume a 500Gb HDD will be more than ample for their use?

500gb is more than enough.

Minecraft is a must. That alone will keep them going for ages. At least it's a creative game. It's amazing seeing some of the things my son has built.

You mean that 12A film that isn't really appropriate for a 5 year old.

Or

Spoiling kids by spending £50 taking the family to see a film and now here have a £50 game to play on your £300 console.

Let's be honest, most parents don't buy their kids an Xbox One. The Dad has one and the kids just happen to play on it. lol

Taking kids to see a film isn't spoiling them. They don't understand the cost or value of it. They are just seeing a film. A console is different because it's a materialistic possession.

As much as i dont personally like consoles i think they are great for kids.

My daughter has a ps3,wii u,nintendo 3ds and my choice would be a xbox one, there are so many good titles on all the consoles but the xbox would be my choice.

I wasn't saying it was.

About that new Avengers LEGO game that you want that ties in with the movie we just saw.. well son, it wasn't released for your 16 year old console.

Which was directed at me because, apparently, buying your kids a used console makes you a bad parent.

My suggestion of a PS2 over current or previous generation was just thinking slightly outside the box. It has loads of games for kids and isn't connected to internet. So it still fitted the OP's needs, apart from the fact he'd be gifting something that was used. Which he may not have wanted to do.

All irrelevant now since it looks like he's decided to buy an Xbox One.

It was tongue in cheek, hence the cheeky smiley at the end of my post.

Nowhere in either of the OP's posts did he mention budget was an issue and with the kids specifically mentioning the latest LEGO games a PS2 was never going to fit the bill.

You have however showed yourself to be an absolutely humourless individual who now has the honour of being #3 on my ignore list. Congratulations.

Yeah, kids don't care what they are playing them on. Minecraft on the Amazon Fire TV has sold stacks.

I took as tongue in cheek until you went back and made an edit.

So, no, I'm not a humourless individual. I just responded to you with reasoned argument and managed to do it without any insults.

And just to be clear:

The OP didn't specify latest Lego games.

the main driver is really game availability, and of course given their age they won't be playing most of the AAA titles around today, so it'll likely be the simple arcade driving games, platformers, and things such as the Lego series

PS2 has nearly 2500 games.
PS2 doesn't have any of the latest AAA titles.
PS2 has a glut of arcade or kart style racing and platform games. Including Lego games.

If possible any console they do get would not be connected to the internet either

PS2 arrived when online was in it's infancy for consoles and although you can technically connect it to the internet, it certainly isn't required to play any of the games.

Things such as 4K etc are not a consideration as they won't have access to anything more than a basic 1080p TV, and they are kids so really won't care anyway.

PS2 tops out at 1080i in a few games, so not exactly cutting edge. But since it doesn't matter then the PS2 graphics will be good enough.

So I'll stand by my suggestion as fitting the bill.

Oh Lordy. Don't get them a PS2. That console was obviously great in its day but no longer. That would be so embarrassing for the poor kids when they go back to school in January!

Yeah, got to buy them the latest and greatest.

Might as well get them the latest iPhone and iPad as well, wouldn't want a 5 and 7 year old not to be fully kitted out when they go back to school.

FFS the worlds gone mad or maybe I'm just old fashioned.

Do kids today ever get told no or "we can't afford it"?

360 or ps3 either will be fine both have minecraft which kids adore! Plus can be had for cheap along with massive librarys of games on each which again 2nd hand you can get a lot of game for your money

Yes they do, when it's true. But if I can buy my nephews something good you can be sure I will, and having worked my arse off to be doing very well in my field, I can. I'm not going to buy them a second hand present, they deserve more than that. Kidly take your negative and judgemental attitude elsewhere if you don't mind. I posted this thread to obtain some genuine feedback from those who know about consoles, not attract some sort of childish argument.

For those of you who have offered your suggestions, thank you, looks like XBox one is the way to go. Still looking for some game suggestions however if anyone has any more.

I don't think they'd like Minecraft to be honest. They are like me really and are action loving, war mongering, stereotypical boys. They also won't get long periods to play video games, it's a bad weather activity when they can't go outside, so games that can be played and enjoyed for 30-60 minutes at a time are preferred (split screen multiplayer would be perfect, but not essential) .

You're on a fairly affluent forum. I'd hazard a guess that most people in this forum were not ever told 'we can't afford it', I'd also guess they carry this attitude forward into their lives. It's one of the reasons we, as a nation, are so credit heavy and why 'pay day loan' companies do so well. The notion of 'saving up' for something or even coming to the realization that you can't have something doesn't happen as often as it should.

iPhones are a good example. I'd imagine if you told people they couldn't get an iPhone on credit but instead had to save up the £700 odd quid it costs, they probably wouldn't end up spending that £700 on a phone because lump sums are real, monthly payments aren't real.

The OP did say price wasn't an issue. Newer consoles will get better support, it's a no brainer. £200 for a console isn't really that much these days.

Hang on a minute.

I didn't make any judgements about you or direct anything at you whatsoever, other than my PS2 suggestion and the reasons for it.

Nor did I start the negativity.

Some people need to go back and read what I said and who I quoted.

You asked for a suggestion, my answer fulfilled your brief. I also mentioned that you may not want to gift a used item.

Someone else had dig at me. Suggesting they wouldn't want to be one of my kids because they might get a used PS2 instead of a new £300 Xbox One. Which I would've taken as a joke had they not edited their post and make it personal.

From then on I argued on the side of a man who grew up in a era when kids didn't have the massive material expectation that some of todays children do.

You want to buy your nephews an Xbox One? That's entirely your prerogative and I don't have any issues with that at all.

I do have issues with people suggesting that giving a child a used games console some how makes you a bad parent and the kids life at school is doomed.
