Found some odd damage this morning

So I'm just about to go for a Sunday ride, take the cover off and find this:

I guess I didn't notice when I came back on Friday night as it was a bit dark, but I have no idea how long I was riding around like this. Has a cord come out my tyre and lashed the back of the bike over and over? It was getting a bit low but no cords visible.

Or have I gone over something that stuck in the tyre and kept smacking the back? Such bad luck this week, crashed the car then this.
 
Certainly looks like it. Quite bald in the middle of your tyre and seems as thought some cord has stripped out and lashed it up as you said.
 
Like Rossi says it definitely looks like some cord has come loose and you've just been flailing the back of the bike with it, I'm surprised you didn't hear/feel that amount of damage though.

Yep that's a cord that's 'escaped' and lashed the rear of your bike for a few hundred metres. That rear tyre is well gone TBH, but I wouldn't have expected a cord to come out like that, have the checked all over the tyre for any other damage/bigger bald spots?
 
Pirelli rosso II's, but they should have tread in the middle...

"getting a bit low" is not how I'd describe them phil675 - ****ed is more like it. :D TBH that should have been replaced a few hundred miles ago, at least (I know the big v-twin likes to eat rear tyres!).

Edit: from another forum - the wear is the same, phil - your tyre was basically exactly like in this picture, and then the steel cords came out.

Mmm I know they were past it but I only just got the bike so was waiting for payday, and of course wanted to ride it.

Ah well lesson learned.

Actually they don't look anything like as bad as the ones in your pic. The OPs tyre still has a continuous band of rubber across its width with no cords being shown.

Unless it's bald as a coot somewhere else on the circumference I'd suspect this was more likely cause by some damage that cut into the cords and allowed them to unwind. I've never seen that happen before, even with tyres that were more canvass than rubber.

OP, it would be a good idea to check if it's done any significant damage to the front of the swingarm as well.

There's no cords showing because they've escaped!! :D If you look at the (lack of) tread, on both tyres, there's just a slightest hint of a tread groove near where the cords are/would be showing. They're both bald as a coot down the middle and pretty at much the same wear stage. You probably are right about the other damage though, even exposed cords shouldn't just unwind like that.
 
I whipped the wheel off and swingarm is ok, just looks like the paint has been rubbed off over time, right at the top where the mudguard bolts on.

Look at the rubber where the cords have escaped. The cuts have almost closed up which suggests there is still a reasonable thickness of rubber. If it were worn down to the cords that wouldn't happen. Also whilst the tyre is clearly well worn, there is still some sign of the tread grooves all the way to the middle.
 
Glad your ok though mate nothing happened to yourself, I had this happen on my Street Triple a few months back, mine actually blew a hole in the tyre lol was on my way to work 35 miles away :D

so what do you suggest caused the damage then? ;) not the cords escaping? which is quite clear in the picture imo that they have snapped and damaged the bike.

I don't think he's arguing that the cords escaped and caused the damage just that the cords escaping was not due to the tyre being worn down to an unacceptable level.
