Hi all,

my trusty s4 has finally failed on me and I saw a deal for an s5 neo 1000mins/5000txts/2gb data (free phone) for 15pm. How would it compare to the s4 or the newer s5? Should I got for this?

Thanks

Yeah it's basically a re-make of the S5 with a slower CPU but it does run Android 6.0. Both phones are too old to expect updates for much longer though.

Personally, I wouldn't touch it though. Samsung phones don't tend to age well (especially the kind of Touchwiz that you still find on the S5 series) and it'll get slow quick.

I'd opt for the newer Galaxy A3 2016 or maybe something like a Huawei P8 Lite or P9 Lite. If you like bigger phones the new Moto 4G is definitely worth a look cause it has the specs of the A5 2016 (minus fingerprint reader) for a price lower than that of the A3 2016.

Thanks for the replies guys... How does the g4 compare to the neo?

As you can see the CPUs are about equally fast, both sport 2GB RAM and 16GB ROM that is expandable by MicroSD card.

S5 Neo advantages:
- IP67 certified
- AMOLED display

Moto G4 advantages:
- Cheaper
- Slightly bigger battery
- Basically stock Android

General differences:
- Moto G4 is 5.5" while the S5 Neo is 5.1"
- Camera sensors are obviously different. I can't see there being much difference in photo quality between the two. S5 Neo has more megapixels but the G4 has a newer sensor.

This review put me off the moto g4 and g4 plus:

I would go for the huawei p9 lite if you can find a good deal.

The downsides the reviewer goes on about most are that he thinks it's too big and doesn't like that the battery isn't removable.

Also the entire review compares it to the 3rd Gen Moto G and whether it's worth upgrading.

The P9 is a horrible device so would not recommend the P9 Lite. The P9 lags all over the shop and freezes.

Errhh, honestly I think you might not be using it right. The P9 is one of the fastest phones around at the moment, I've used several of them and none have been slow. Even a customer who wanted us to restore a full 23GB backup from his old phone lol.

The thing that put me off moto g4 most is the jankiness comment. I have a moto 1st gen and it's very smooth and i've heard bad things about the snapdragon 617 in terms of lack of smoothness in quite a few phones. The huawei p9 lite uses kirin 650 and reviews Ive seen say it's a smooth experience.

I actually have a huawei p9 and it's great. No freezes or stuttering. In fact it's the smoothest phone ive ever owned. Really super slick.

IIRC, the S5 Neo is generally a better phone than even the S6.
I'm no longer into phones that much and just wanted one that did everything I wanted better than my Desire Z, mainly handling modern apps... But those of my friends who are 'phoney fans' were quite impressed.
Certainly I've had no trouble with it. 16mp camera, pretty fast system, SD card, removable battery, etc...

I'm sure there are phones that are 0.1GHz faster or something, but this does well enough for the price (ie free with cheap contract).

The Neo is in no way a better phone than the S6. Worse screen, less Ram, no wireless charging and worse camera features.
Then IDRC... well, to some extent, anyway. A non-techy friend got the S6 and my Neo had better features in most of the areas he wanted.

I have removable storage, removable battery, better battery, radio, and some other things I can't recall any more, while his was stuffed with a whole bunch of things that neither of us wanted.
Wireless charging? Is it THAT much of a hassle to plug a cable in, instead of placing it on a plate that has a cable plugged into it, or whatever?

Ultimately, though, they all do pretty much the same thing, there's hardly any discernible difference in actual use that either of us can see and they even look the same as every other phone these days. So long as it's not got an Apple on it, I'm happy!!

Of course they all do the same thing. It's like saying the iPhone 6s is the same as the 6. The Galaxy S6 is loaded with better specs that the S5 neo. The only thing Samsung dropped the ball with in the S6 was the lack of SD slot which they have thankfully rectified in the S7.

A few reason why the huawei p9 lite might be a good choice for you:

- Metal sides gives a more premium feel than all plastic (back is plastic tho).
- Very reliable and fast finger scanner.
- Some reviews say the screen on the lite is the same as the p9's because it looks the same, which I think is great for a £200 phone (although according to notebookcheck.net they are slightly different).
- The speaker is about the same as the one on the p9 and the p9's speaker IMO is pretty good, especially for a bottom firing one. The honor c which is another option has a weaker speaker.
- Camera is surprisingly good for the price and has a good array of manual controls.
- Performance according to this notebookcheck review puts it at least 19% ahead of the honor x5, which uses a snapdragon 616, in all the benchmarks. Basemark OS II comes in at 99% faster on the p9 lite than the x5.
- Battery life is good and better than it's big brother, the p9.
- Good screen visablity in direct sunlight.

The emui skin is pretty bad to some people though. I think it's biggest sin is that it automatically puts borders around all the icons and it doesn't look nice. Luckily it's possible to get rid of the icon borders by downloading a free android N theme from the xda developers website, but that changes other things too, to look more stock. Or download 'stockify for emui' from the play store and that'll get rid of them and it won't change anything else.

But I'm being bias suggesting the p9 lite because I've honestly never researched the samsung s5 neo, but I thought if you are interested in the p9 lite then some of these points might still be useful :)

Explain how I should use it then.

EMUI is insistent on closing apps down for no apparent reason. Try this, download GSam and the system will close it down after half an hour or so.

Google Now will just stop working, meaning you have to restart the phone.

It's a really mediocre phone considering how much it costs. I'd say the OnePlus 3 is leagues above it, even the S7 is.

I have a p9 and I have had some problems with some apps closing. Clipboard actions was one of them but it works now. I had to set it as a protected app (in phone manager). Set accessibility to on (something it asks for anyway). But I also had to go to settings>app>advances options>ignore optimisations and set to 'allow' for it. Same thing with Lastpass and it's 'fill helper' (that puts your pass's into chrome for you). I did the same thing as above and it works fine. But I don't use google now or Gsam so maybe there is still a problem for some apps. I could test it I guess.

It's ridiculous you have to do that though. No other Android phone behaves this way.

I really hate the way EMUI constantly bugs you about memory and battery life, almost like Huawei are scared you might actually use the phone off a charger
Yeah, it's really annoying. I don't have those reminders anymore, I think I turned them off in settings or disabled something but I remember getting them when I first got the phone. Tbh whenever I get a new android phone I always disable the things I don't want that maybe are running in the background. There is one cool thing (imo) about EMUI and that's the 'theme editor' in the play store. Lets you change some interesting stuff.
