Brexit thread - what happens next

Because most people aren't "racist", rather a small proportion are, some of them quite possibly emboldened by the brexit results and believing they are actually the majority.

So the 'increase' in hate crimes is likely a myth perpetuated by those with an agenda?

Surely hate crimes will naturally rise as more people come into the country? The amount of people spouting racist abuse stays the same, but there are now more people to report it?

Or do both racist and immigrant numbers rise equally?

Using Leaver's logic that economists know nothing and they failed to predict last recession that can surely only mean one thing - that we are in fact heading into recession :D

On the "hate crime" thing over the last 5 or so years the number of hate crimes against gay people has increased dramatically. (Fun fact twice as many as islamaphobic crimes)

What do we blame that on?

People being gay, obviously?

this is obviously tongue in cheek but for the mods heres the :p

why?

i cant see the French being all that arsed about having free movement with the uk tbh.

they seem pretty anti immigration at the moment, they may want a similar deal.

It's nothing to do with free movement per say.

The French will do everything they can to stop the UK getting special treatment.

More good news from the retail sector - Up 1.4% (M/M) 5.9%(Y/Y) despite predictions of doom and gloom post-BREXIT.

Is anyone posting positive BREXIT news to this thread? Less hand-wringing and more positivity!

Warm weather, YOY vs bad last year
happens a lot in retail, its nothing to do with Brexit realyly, but could be some positive tourism. But then just as Brits are going to places like Spain rather than Turkey/egypt etc, I am sure some of our near continental friends are seeing UK as a great place to visit as its nice and "safe"

Probably both rise, but it's hard to quantify officially. Most people living in areas affected by immigration will have a 'feel' for whether tensions are on the increase or not, but such evidence is too easily dismissed as anecdotal or having an agenda.

Something that needs to be considered is that there's a difference between racism and being concerned about immigration. Obviously there's some crossover, but being concerned about immigration doesn't automatically make someone a racist.

It is possible that core racism hasn't increased massively but that racists feel emboldened by the wider population being concerned about immigration and feed off of that. My worry is that there's not a lot of response to this in the general population, many seem passive about it or in denial about the potential of Brexit to cause a rise in racism and tension. But turning a blind eye is a form of latent racism.

IMO racism in the true sense of the word has declined, yet ethnics are an ever increasing percentage of the UK population. Consider the TV series `Til death us do part" and "Love thy neighbour" with Warren Mitchell playing the misogynist Alf Garnett. The term "****" was strewn through every episode with blatant racism to his black lodger and those around him. Cherie Blair's brother was called a scouse git, and Liverpudlians condemned by Alf as idle thieves. Consider how lodging houses had signs up in the front windows saying "No blacks" or No Irish". Consider how many in my old grammar school, and in the Roman Catholic school up the road, and talking to my friends many years later, in many schools in general, went out "**** bashing". This was in the late sixties and early seventies. What would occur if a group of 30 or more pupils from a decent school decided to go looking for ethnics to beat up these days, and the governers of the school knew what was going on? The teachers at my old school would have known what was going on, but nothing much was ever said about it. The administration of a school found to have pupils beating up ethnics would have the vapours these days, and rightly so! No way will the remake of the Alf Garnett series show blatant racism to mainstream TV viewers. No way would a sign in a house with rooms to let be allowed to say "No blacks" or "No Irish". So one could say racism has declined greatly despite the ethnic population being many fold larger these days...
