I have had my eyes set on a long battery, slim, light ultra books with an i7 6700hq 16gb ddr4 and a ice build quality..

A couple of these new MSI and Gigabyte laptops seem to fit the bill but would anyone consider them capable as portable uni machines for note taking and general work?

So he can game?

Game? At University?? I've never heard such a scandalous remark. They should be studying!

If you can, hold off a little until until Gigabyte show off their 14 inch stuff with 1060's

Otherwise that new 14 inch MSI is looking tempting for me too, although a tad expensive.

A new Auros X3 is also due, which looks nice. For me im waiting for the perfect mix of a 14inch laptop, with a 1060, 16GB of RAM and a TB3 port.

Don't bother with gigabyte. Honestly go with MSI as their laptops have TB3, which future proofs you for a while longer with GPU docks via TB3.

Gigabyte is a pointless purchase.

I would go with: -

Even with the 8gb ram?

And is the battery actually going to hold up in these MSIs

And on the whole gaming at uni thing, I'm 28 and an ex business owner, I'm capable of separating work and play :p

The 10 series are extremely power efficient so you should be okay. Plus the MSI stealth is very lightweight, so good for carying around. As for RAM you are better off getting more post purchase for cheaper. I'm sure you can upgrade the stealth RAM, but I would do a little more research on that pre purchase?

Good on you for goong back into uni! Studying anything interesting?
