Single card replacement for pair of 6970's

Pretty much what it says. I have a gaming rig with a i7 3770k, 16gig of ram and a pair of Sapphire 6970 which are crossfired. I also use it for Photoshop and Lightroom.

The system has been running well and been pretty stable with a relatively mild overclock.

Whilst I will be rebuilding in 12/18 months (when money allows) I would like to replace the two 6970's with a single card with at least similar performance to the two cards I am replacing.

I don't mind whether I get Nvidia or AMD as long as the single card gives better performance.

What's your budget and PSU wattage?

An AMD 290 or NVIDA 970 or better will be a good upgrade over your current SLI solution even when its scaling at its best.

An AMD 280x would probably even match it TBH.

To see what GPU to recommend? He might have a massively overkill PSU or one that just cuts it. Also thanks for your helpful comment.

I believe his point was that if his system can power 2x 6970's it can power ANY single graphics card on the market.

Idd i was just gonna say that.

I imagine a 290x for second hand or 480 for new would be a suitable amd replacement for your cards for similar performance. For nvidia a 970/980/1060 maybe.

I personally would pickup a cheap 290x as they sell cheap as chips second hand as low as £100, that should keep you going until you build your new system.

290x would be quite a bit faster than two 6970s even when they are scaling well. Particularly in the latest games. All while using less power than CF 6970s.

I went a bit nuts when I built it, I got a OCZ 1kw modular PSU as I wanted plenty of overhead. I skimped a bit on the PSU on my old machine which caused problems when I put my first 6970 in it...by the time I finished my "upgrade" had turned into a new i7, new motherboard, SSD, 8tb of storage, sound card....and another 6970.

Should have more than enough in reserve for almost anything.

Thanks for the replies guys. To be honest I only research this stuff when I am about to build a new machine otherwise I would go broke.

Budget wise somewhere around the £250-75 mark is about right. Thanks for the ideas they look about what I was thinking of.

If your budget is £250-275 a GTX 1060 or rx 480 will best best.

For 1060

For rx 480

If your gonna be doing a new build soon, just pickup an old second hand card from the MM to keep you going a few months. Personally i wouldnt be upgrading your system yet, it looks like its got loads of life left in it for gaming.

I would just throw in a 1080 overclock the CPU if it isnt already and your done for a few more years.

The 480's coming onto the market was one of the reasons I started to think along the single card idea...that and a desire to reduce my electricity bill to something below that of the local aluminium smelter :).

The i7 has already been overclocked to a very stable 3.9, that and a 480 should hold me a bit longer (and maybe add another one later :) ).

I'd like to thank all you guys for being so helpful, it looks like I will be getting a RX 480 unless I come up on the lottery anyway.
