I'm having a discussion with a friend from here. He thinks flatscreen tvs have terrible viewing angles and would rather have an old CRT tv for that reason.

I told him that on my old Samsung flatscreen TV, the viewing angle isn't anything that has bothered me, It goes slightly darker yeah, nothing much though. But I love HD and I could never go back to SD.

I might be wrong but I've told him I'm not convinced he can see the difference between SD and HD otherwise he wouldn't even consider wanting to go back to soft detail CRT. :p

Would anyone here happily give up HD and go back to CRT for better viewing angles?

Dont forget loosing a quarter of the room if its a decent size lol.

Ive not noticed a viewing angle issue with an LCD for about 10 years at least? You'd have to be sitting almost parallel to the screen to notice it as an issue.

The perceived differences in motion and refresh rates are mostly what people miss from the top tier old crt gaming monitor's. Myself I'm happy with 60fps on lcd and not really noticing blurring or ghosting unless it's a real poor lcd monitor. Be nice to see or use a oled high refresh gaming monitor though.

I've noticed on cheap monitors only. A decent monitor no issue. Not noticed any issue on a recent (Last couple of years) Flat Screen TV's.

I couldn't go back to the resolution on a CRT though.

1080p's clarity compared to CRT's is such a huge difference there is no way anyone would go back.

also in terms of viewing angles, it's only an issue if you buy a cheap panel and mount it too high or too low. most people sit face on or within 15 degrees.

if viewing angles are an issue then IMO their tv is in the wrong location rather than the tv itself being the issue

modern tv's go up to 200hz i believe.

if the tv is 3d capable it has to be a minimum 120hz i believe but that may not be true.

Thanks for the replies.

Btw chaps, been clearing my place today ready for the decorators on monday, and finally got rid of my old but still perfectly functioning 25" Trinitron, with built in side and top speakers and two separate Sony 15w speakers behind the sofa. Weighs a ton. I lifted, dragged and trolleyed it to the car.

Goodbye 20th century. :( :D

Which TVs did you have? LCDs have elevated blacks off angles.

I'm curious... You've been viewing this all this time? and you don't decorate?

CRT is superior still in many ways. Better for SD, better angles, better motion, better response, better sound. Of course with hq content and big screens the newer models aren't matched but people have been happy to pay for an awful lot of rubbish over the last decade or so.

I haven't used it for years nor the room it was in. Now that I'm preparing to sell my place, I thought it about time to get rid of old stuff that's been collecting dust.

I'd go back to crt yes, but not at the price of resolution.

There are matrix crt technologies allowing massive resolutions but none have ever made it well in the market as people want skinny tv's and are prepared to pay thousands to get the latest and greatest ultra hd while the majority of content still languishes in sd.

The advertised Hz for TVs is often not directly comparable with a monitor - they often accept a 30 or 60Hz/fps source and then interpolate that to 200+Hz often with some image "enhancement" along the way - that is fine for watching a movie but if you were trying to play a game on there, especially from PC, you'd notice it was nowhere near as responsive as the Hz would suggest (even ignoring the higher base input lag).

I can remember when LCD monitors first came out,, we were complaining that the resolution wern't no where near as high as CRT monitors.

To be honest the CRT tv's/monitor's were just getting quite good when they ditched them for the LCD
