Am running a ASUS 26'' 1080p monitor at the moment. But will be possibly upgrading with in the year to a newer monitor. (Hopefully) ASUS PB287Q Black 28" 4K
my system is as follows

Intel Xeon w3540 cpu
12GB 1333 MHZ Ram
ATI HD4800
Psu corsair 700w

My cards only got 512 meg of ram and i wont to start buying games for it again.
i have upto £250 for a new card.
Any recommendations please

Is your CPU overclocked at all? It might not be worth spending the full £250 on a 480 or a 1060 if it's at stock, as a Bloomfield Xeon will bottleneck them in many games.

Unfortunately am unable to overclock the cpu. in or out the bios.
its a supermicro X8SAX motherboard. Ive always overclocked my cpu. but not this time.. Gutted. but was a last min pc buy as my other one completely died last month.

will this board take any 1366 CPU? would upgrading that help.

The board just doesn't seem to support overclocking at all, so it probably wouldn't be worth it unless you could pick up one of the top end i7s dirt cheap. As for a card, maybe look at either the RX 470 or one of the GTX 970s being sold off cheap. Bottleneck or no, they're still going to be a huge upgrade over what you have. Alternatively, there's the used market as well, where you might be able to pick up something decent for not much more than £100. I just don't think it's worth spending £250 unless you plan to keep the card for a long time and it might end up in another system, in which case the 480 would be the better bet ahead of the 1060 IMO.

Is the Sapphire Radeon RX470 AMD Polaris 4GB card going to be a big increase of performance. If i cash in all my points i can get this for £170. Whats peoples opinions on this card.

Good for 1080p and a massive upgrade over your current card. Not far off the rx 480 in most games but I think you'll struggle with 4k when you upgrade unless you drop some settings. However the price isn't so great, too close to the next tier apart from the Sapphire rx 470 which is around £165ish. Though I have no doubt they will drop in price when the gtx 1050 arrives.
