I am looking at buying a new monitor to accompany my nvidia 1070.

I have 2 dell 1080p monitors and very happy with them but the thought of replacing both with one is tempting.

I am looking for a single monitor 4K or ultra wide.

I need it to be a good all rounder as I photo edit, code and play games.

Budget upto £1k.

for gaming, imo 3440x1440 ultrawide.

Once I upgrade my platform, that's where my next bundle of cash is going.

As for productivity, I couldn't realistically comment. Both are really high resolutions and offer lots of real estate. Go into a brick & mortar shop and see if you can try them out?

I find for photo editing my 34" ultrawide lacking in the height department. But the extra width is great for games, movies and surfing the internet(i have two wondows open half a screen each).

For a 1070 youll want to stay 1440, the x34a is a good gaming monitor, not sure how it stands for photo editing though as i nothing about photo editing :)

The curve will add distortion towards the edges so judging straight lines in say horizons might not be the best. A flat monitor might be better in this regard. Would i swap my curved for a flat.....no chance.

I write code to so it needs to handle that too.
4k then. Speaking from my experience since I write code and I have tried hands-on both 4K and UW.

BTW you can't judge how 4k feels from photos. On photos it looks just like usual monitor, but you really should see one with your own eyes to experience just how much sharper it is than 1440p.

UW feel like it naturally falls to giving you two normal screens side-by side.
On the other hand, 4K gives you four 1080p FullHD screens :)

However I only consider 4K better than UW for >= 32inch display size. Otherwise it will be just way to small to make 4K worth any effort.

a 1070 won't be powerful enough for games in 4k will it
Depends on the game. 2.5D top-down games and anything similar less resource intensive work just fine in 4K.

But top-end FPS obviously not, though you still can play them in 1440p. DPI is very high so I have found any rescaling blur is much less noticeable than on standard DPI monitor.

i love my 4k brillaint picture quality.

Some games still have issues at ultra wide scale which is what put me off.

Ok have to turn the odd setting down at 4k but it still looks better.
