New monitor 4K or ultra wide

I feel I'll have to get an Ultrawide and a 4k screen to see which one I like, hard decision to make and it's the faffing about with WQHD

Depends on the game. 2.5D top-down games and anything similar less resource intensive work just fine in 4K.

But top-end FPS obviously not, though you still can play them in 1440p. DPI is very high so I have found any rescaling blur is much less noticeable than on standard DPI monitor.

My 980ti handled all the games i threw at it at 4k using med-high details. As long as you dont expect ultra settings and anti aliasing then its ok. I would still suggest a 1440 for gaming though as ultra settings are nice :) Just depends if it suits your needs for coding and photography.

Dont coders like to turn their monitors on their side? I cant imagine thats easy with a super wide unless you fit a third party stand. I dunno if its needed as i dont understand coding, i just always see them with their monitors on their sides.

I know some do, but personally I just like to set up my desk perfectly and never touch it again ;)

Therefore I like 32" 4K that gave me tons of vertical space without need to turn around anything.

That's the most correct approach. I did get UW and thought it was pretty good (not without drawbacks though), then tried 4K - put on some 4K videos, surfed Amazon in High DPI a bit and was just "WOW, absolutely must keep this!"

While of course I'm limited to 60Hz, I did try running a couple of games at 3440x1440 with 1:1 pixel mapping on my 40" 4K screen yesterday (so basically creating a 34" ultrawide within the screen surrounded by black borders) and the ultrawide part looked pretty small within the overall 40" display. It's not for everyone but I'm happy with my choice and the options it gives me (4K for games that run well, lower res for more intense ones), especially as by using a 40" TV I only spent about half of the cost of the best 34" ultrawide monitors! :)

Take a look at our 28" 4K monitor, great reviews for colour re-production, has a 1ms response time, all the inputs and a very low price U2879VF

Doesn't have height adjust or Vesa however for the price you are getting a great panel!

I would stay away from 4k unless our going to buy more gpu oomph, or you like playing games in low settings mate 1 1070 aint going to cut it

It really depends on the games being played - so far I've been fine at ultra settings on slightly older games, high on a majority of more recent games and medium on a few (eg Witcher 3, Far Cry, Assassin's Creed.) The nicest surprise remains 90-100fps on Forza Apex on 4K with all settings maxed including MSAA.

Of course a 1070 isn't very future proof for 4K but particularly as someone with a big backlog I'm very happy with the performance :)

Edit: especially as I can still run a lower resolution either stretched or with 1:1 pixel mapping if I choose to, since the screen is 40" - I can just create a 27" 1440p image on the screen if I'm playing a more demanding game :)

Worst case, I just play at 1080p on the 55" TV also connected to the PC!
