Am I being daft? (pulling out of house move due to broadband speed)

When my folks and I moved to where we live now we had 1mbps down, it was a right pain but we had never been heavy users so didn't bother anyone other than me.

Now we've just been upgraded to FTTP so now everyone's happy

I'm on 2.5Mb 'fiber' here, I work from home, I download large files (overnight mostly), stream iPlayer and Netflix (not HD admittedly) video conference and screen share fine.

Gaming would probably be a no-no, I can only do one of the above at any given time, but I survive none the less.

This honestly sounds like hell to me...

Am I being daft or is broadband speed that important these days??

How important is it to you?

Personally, I wouldn't buy a home without fibre broadband.

Placing or upgrading a fibre cabinet costs £25K - £50K, so the house needs to be that much cheaper than the the fibre-enabled houses.

I don't think you are being daft, i wouldn't even consider moving into a house that couldn't get either FTTC or Virgin nowadays.

Spot on. I knew my new build would get FTTC a few months after I moved in as the cabinet was already installed, if it wasn't for that I may not have bought the house.

Cannot seem to get any info on whether my cabinet will ever be fibre enabled so I have made the cal to the estate agent to notify them I wil probably be cancelling.

:(

Seems like a pointless benchmark as it's not like you'll just be able to throw that money at someone and get a fibre cab sorted.

Actually, I inquired of BT a couple of years ago on behalf of the block of flats in which I live and you can indeed do just that.

I will never move into another property unless it has good broadband.

Unless I start a family I'm always going to live in an apartment where Hyperoptic is available, currently getting up to 900Mb down/up for only £45/month.

i'm going to be somewhat controversial here and say it shouldn't be too much of a problem, obviously depending on what you're trying to do.

Same for me although on ADSL rather than a poor fibre connection.

Speed was an unknown as to what it would be like as it was a new build, annoyingly all the old houses around here (the ones we back onto) have Virgin, all the other new build phases after ours got FTTP and Virgin.

It's slightly annoying but not a deal breaker, 4G can plug some gaps and our cab is now in the plans to be done by March next year apparently so fingers crossed...

It would depend on how many other boxes the house ticks as to whether I'd do it again, there were way too many plus points to this house to not buy it just because of internet speed (which was an unknown at the time).

Over time it's likely that this will become less of a problem, just depends if you are prepared to wait. Areas that are not covered now will likely be at some point in future but possibly many many years away.

Plus with the community partnership BT cover some costs, I know I was quoted between 10k and 15k community cost to upgrade our cab if we went down this route.

Got confirmation from the people upgrading my area to Fibre that my cabinet in not in the current or next phase by them so they said to look elsewhere like Virgin.

I rang Virgin on monday morning and they said they were going to send an engineer to the street to see if they could reach the house. They told me to give them 48hours.

I rang back tonight and they said it would take 10 days.. I havent got 10 days to keep the vendor hanging on.

Is 4G an option at all for home use. Ive seen EE do it at £44 per month but 50GB usage cap.

Again, it depends on what you want to do. I wouldn't like to game on it. Not sure on HD video, might depend how strong a signal it is.

Also, 50GB isn't a lot for home use really.

Not great as a long term solution IMO (depending on your usage) - I have a 20GB plan which is great for a few days here and there and in a lot of places I get good speeds but the issues like overall reliability and random slowdowns would drive me up the wall if it was more than a few days at a time.
