How do you pay a main dealer for a car ?

Care to elaborate?

The chargeback system offered by Visa on debit cards is almost the same as the section 75 regs for CC except it's not backed by law and therefore there is no guarantee it'll cover you.
Stick with using a CC if that's what you want as then you've got actual legal regulations to back you up if needs be.

For my old car, I paid by Debit Card with the Chip&Pin machine. I did call the bank ahead and told them to expect a transaction with the given £amount to be coming out within the next 30 minutes ("We'll put a flag on your account to expect it, Sir"), but we still had to call the bank to authorise it and go through some security questions.

I did a bank transfer straight into their account (Stratstone) for my new car which was quite a bit more than what you're trying to pay which cleared into theirs seemingly instantly.

Just do whatever is easiest? Only reason I went for bank transfer on my new one was that I only had to pay the deposit at the dealer and they were 150 miles away so was easier to bank transfer the rest than drive back!

Cool cheers, I was just repeating what I was told by the bank attendant.

So if you pay a small amount on CC and then the rest on debit is only the amount paid on the CC covered or is the full purchase price?

Full purchase as long as you pay over £100 on your CC.

My last two cars have been deposit on c/card then paid off on debit - both times on debit first transaction declined, bank calls, second one cleared fine.

That's with HBOS.
