'Amazing' games that disappointed you

I recently received a 3DS as a present and couldn't resist the opportunity to it / play though Super Metroid - something that sounded right up my alley on paper.

I can't help but be disappointed by it though. I was surprised to get genuinely stuck between two dead ends fairly quickly (but there was quite a lot of space between them). I eventually got passed it, only after reading a vague online hint, which lead me to discovering that through trial and error that:

I had to bomb a specific wall of dozens and dozens of walls that looked the same as all other walls (regular blaster did nothing) and the block would change its pattern slightly, indicating that I had to get through it with a missile. There was absolutely nothing to indicate that some walls / barriers would destruct in that way.

Once you realise that's the sort of logic that you need to play the game, I'm a fair few hours in and I haven't got stuck yet but the core mechanic seems to be 'find the sneaky hidden passage' and it really hasn't held up well IMO. You end up shooting / bombing almost every inch on the screen because, who knows, it might reveal something and it often does. I'm not sure if you've seen AVGN's review of Milon's Secret Castle but I feel there are some parrallels to be drawn.

That said I can't disputed how revolutionary the series is in terms of having 'one big map' to explore. The Metroid Prime games are amazing.

Anyway - what 'amazing' games have disappointed you and why?

Halo 4/5 bought a xb1 for 5 aswell :(

Terrible imo, lost that halo vibe completely!

Fallout 4, just more of the same and actually felt dated for its time in a few ways, they could have done more with there time

Outlast, hyped to be super scary and sure the first 30 minutes were before the cracks begun to show! Also for a 3-4 hour game they really padded it out towards the end and it felt nore like 8! Pointless back tracking etc. Brings me on to my next one

Alien isolation, great in many ways but over stayed its welcome, alien becomes gamie after a while and very predictable! Flame thrower ruins that part

2/3rds of the way through was fine, last 3rd just dragged

Bloodborne for me, picked it up in the Halloween sale last year to see what all the fuss was about with the Souls games (I tried DS1 on PC but it was such a shockingly poor port I never played it).

The gameplay I accept just isn't for me, I don't like games that punish me so hard for screwing up, and having to go through the same crap over and over again turned me off.

What surprised me is how shoddy the presentation of the game is, the UI is awful, the animations are awful, the sounds are awful, most of the ancillary design is terrible.

There's a brilliant core game loop hiding underneath the dross and I'm sure it's great if you like that sort of game, but easily the biggest waste of money I've spent on PS4.

Halo 3. Bought it based on all the hype, after never having played any previous in the series. Was utterly bored by it.

Also Bioshock. Great story, great visuals, great world, really unsatisfactory gameplay.

The gameplay in bioshock infinite was dull, story made up for it but just the shooting etc felt bad

The Last of Us.

I get abuse for this all the time and it's quite possible I'm the only person on earth who doesn't like the game but I found the movement and combat very clunky and awkward.

Thing that let me down with Bioshock Infinite was the gratuitous gore, it was just so jarring and unecessary, right at the beginning when you're just starting and you tear that guys head off, I was like "wtf why I am I ripping people's heads off their shoulders???".

The rest of the story was incredible, but there were some really bizarre choices in there, and the combat was wooly and unsatisfying. First two Bioshocks were much better gameplay wise.

I don't much like first person shooters, so they have to be really satisfying for me to get into them (FEAR, for example). I think I'd have enjoyed Bioshock more if it was more of a walking sim, or puzzle thing, or even a stealth game.

I had very high expectations of the game, too, which probably didn't help.

Going back much further here, but Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Loved Zelda 1, 2 and Link to the Past, was a big N64 fanboy, bought this for £80 on Import and just didn't gel with it.

Just about everyone I know rates it as a 10/10 game, so I realise I'm a massive minority here, but just couldn't get on with it. I guess the jump from 2-D Top-Down to fully 3D was too much for me. But thats odd as Mario 64 is in my top 3 games ever :-/

For the love i have for the story music and acting, the gameplay did fall a bit flat. I liked the reduced ammo etc but the shooting etc and constant use of pallets on water etc just felt a bit meh

I cant comment fairly on ocarina as i dodnt own it back in the day, played it when windwaker came with it on an extra disc. I can see what it did for its time and for gaming.

Agree with mario :D

I get slated constantly when I say it. The Last of Us was massively overrated in my opinion.

Sunset Overdrive was another one people went on and on about. I got it with my Xbox One at Christmas the year it was released and thought it was terrible.

No Man's Sky is another but that appears to be a common trend...

Bioshock. After the System Shocks it felt like a dumbed down, made for console pretender.

Deus Ex. See above, but not as bad and minus the console bit.

Half-Life 2. Half-Life blew me away. From the moment it sticks you in Gordon's shoes on the train ride right through to the end. I was Gordon Freeman. In Half-Life 2 I was this odd, rambo-like mute, running around and doing what people told me to do. It's obviously a good game for many reasons, but it ballsed up entirely what made the original great for me.

You're not alone. That's exactly how i feel about it. Maybe that was deliberate on the part if ND to make you feel venerable, but I felt the battle with the controls was harder than any of the enemies.
