Summer Transfer Window 2016/17 - Rumours & Signings

I'm yet to see anybody suggest better alternatives that are realistically available. I'd love Godin, Reus and Aubameyang too, but its not going to happen.

Stats wise Mustafi is up there with the best CB's in La Liga, is still young for a CB at 24. It might work out, it might not work out, but I can't think of another CB that was available that provided a better option. Even the Napoli guy is probably going to go for >£50m.

Well we missed out on Higuain years ago, signing him this summer wasn't realistically an option when you consider what he was eventually sold for. Lacazette at >£40m doesn't seem like a good bet for me, genuinely, who else is there that we could / should have signed this summer that would want to join?

Its all well and good to say "Oh well if we'd completed the Higuain deal years ago like we should have we wouldn't be in this position" - agreed, we wouldn't, but we cant go back and change the past so we can only really judge this window on the players that were available. I'm gutted we missed out on Micky Targaryen but it was clear that when United declared their interest we were out of the running, who else has moved this summer that we should signed?

I remember people talking the same rubbish when we bought Koscielny and Monreal. Ok they didn't cost 30+mill but they weren't highly rated at the time they joined us but not have become world class. I would hope Mustafi will become world class with us, German international and still young so will get better.

Anyhow getting away from people talking the usual crap about our buys. I'm kinda glad that the Mustafi deal is pretty much done along with Perez, who I've never heard of but can only hope he does well with us. Someone who can play off Giroud or if not, latch onto Ozil's razor sharp passes and bang them in. Probably not so I'm not expecting a lot, haven't expected a lot for the past few seasons:p

They are two different players mate...you know that right ? Mustafi is average and you'll see soon enough.

You forgot that Man City splashed over 100m on useless defenders?

Or what about Man Utd spending about 80m on Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Depay & Darmian last season?

Schneiderlin at Southampton was a very good player indeed, the fact LvG couldnt use his abilities correctly / he didnt settle at Utd quickly doesnt stop him being a class player.

Depay is still very young and inexperienced - he is certainly better than what he has shown so far (latter goes for Darmian to a lesser extent too, not forgetting that he was only around ~£15m also).

If /when JM decides to sell any or all of those three (next summer or later), given how the market is currently and going forward its unlikely Utd would actually lose much money on any of those deals so they were worth the gamble. If they drastically improve then Utd have gained considerably.

edit - Schweiny was a mistake waiting to happen and while the transfer fee was tiny, the wages are sky high and looks like costing the best part of £20m for the next two seasons.

Well we wanted a ST & CB so we will have to see how they both are in the PL.

i just wish wenger would offload some of the deadwood in our team.

We have so many useless players, especially in the attacking department.

At least I hope he loans/sells the likes of Sanogo, Iwobi, one of Chamberlain or Walcott.
And loan out either Chambers or Holding.

I know we need strength in depth but Walcott's on 100k and was useless last season.

Very optimistic thinking there Frank. The transfer fees Utd paid is only a small part of the problem when it comes to shifting them on, it's their wages that will and possibly has blocked sales. Which clubs, that can or will match their wages, will want any of those 3 at all, let alone at the premium prices Utd paid (for 2 anyway)?

It's a problem any big club has. It seems like unless they're a striker that's proven themselves to be a key player at a lower level (Benteke for example) then when a player fails at a big club it's near impossible (or very expensive) to move them on.

I would be amazed if we don't see wages increase as a result of the new tv money so that should make it easier for players on perhaps inflated wages to be moved on.

you may be right, but I dont think any of those named will be on insane wages (possibly depay given the high profile transfer and fight for signature with Liverpool esp) but other two I dont think they will be on huge wages (Darmian is on £60k/week, Depay £90k and Schneiderlin £100k according to google) so I doubt they would be that hard to move unlike the 200k for Schweiny that is understandably hard / impossible to move

Also consider the market has moved significantly since we bought them a year ago, and may well move again next summer so I doubt any of those for mid table clubs would be difficult to match .....now persuading the player to want the move for other reasons is another matter entirely.

You think Iwobi should be sold?

I'd say he's the must keep out of all the players you mentioned.

palace whinging that spurs have opened their offer for zaha with a bid of £12m. look, just cos levy got £8m for pritchard, doesn't mean he wants a go at being the taker

I just listed players thats could be loaned or sold, I would not sell him.

What gets me with wenger is he buys youngsters with potential and throws them in the deep end.

Take Liverpool last week, was it not Holding and Chambers as CB pairing?

It would be great to give our youngsters play time but around quality and experienced players to help them improve.

Lol whatever mate, at the end of the day we have signed him for a high fee which galls me but we left it too late.

For someone who you consider average, he must be bloody good average to be a German international. I saw him a few times in the euros and he seemed pretty decent.

How did we lose money on Zaha?

How can we be so bad in the transfer market that we buy players for well over market price but sell the same player on for well under that price? Something is wrong here.

Thats how most big clubs work unless they do what Chelsea have done which is loan them out and buy them early. You buy a player you hope will be first team material, he doesn't play much, his stock drops and you cut your losses. He may then go to another club and do quite well and his value increases again. Its not that hard to comprehend how this happens.

Another young player to fancy playing for spurs only for teams to reject offers, go public and then create a rift between player and club :)

The managers who wasted such money get called out on it. Other clubs spending money badly isn't an excuse for someone else to spend money badly. Chelsea/City's squads over the past 5 years considering how much they spend have honestly been extremely poor compared to what they should have been. But a lot of their terrible spending is different managers wanting different things and wanting some marque signings, so every 2-3 years a new manager is shoving some big names out of the door because he wants his own big names in.

Also of those, only Depay has been a bad buy. Darmian iirc didn't cost that much and wasn't particularly bad, just seems like he's not working out there though he played well at first. LVG didn't really like Schneiderlin and Bastion was actually frequently good but injured too often. Depay is the only player who just looked **** in all but like 2 games in the entire season.

Depay I believe will be a excellent player but needs time, I feel he needs game time, maybe a loan out to sunderland would help :D

Why would Spurs want that useless dogend? He was awful for Man United.
