Based on the current rumours I would not expect anything other than a minor iteration update, save your cash and move onto a rolling contract.
Last year? The other half is going for an upgrade from her 4S. I want to make sure I get on the 7 preorder.
The 8 is going to be 2018 so I'm not sure I would wait. It will be the 7S next year. I doubt they will have been working on the 8 other than some basic conceptual ideas at this point.

Not really a good comparison, the floppy was replaced with good tech, if the 3.5mm society goes it will be replaced with an adaptor which is an awful design solution.
Apple aren't going to convince every headphone manufacturer to offer lightening connectors are they, so 3.5mm will continue. Apple will get some headphone manufacturers, cough - beats - cough, to create overpriced headphones with lightning plugs and fanboys will buy them in droves.
When the majority of headphones are Bluetooth then apple should consider dropping 3.5mm, otherwise it should stay put.

Nope, next year is the big one - tenth anniversary, that's why they're dropping the "tick tock" this year and doing another minor update to the 6/6S.
There'll be no 7S. Next year's will be the 8 or maybe even 10.

I'm not sure we can even be certain of that. We will have to wait and see. Anniversaries can be anything from a special edition with a different colour right through to a one off different phone. Bet there is still a 7S.
Proper headphones use quarter inch jacks, not 3.5mm
You're making a mountain out of a molehill. Manufacturers targetting mobile devices, such as in-ear models and Beats and the like, will swiftly switch to a lightning connector with no real problems. If you want to use high end models with an analog jack connection, you'll use an adapter which Apple may or may not provide for free with the phone.
If you don't like it, don't upgrade. no one's forcing you to.
Nothing is ever certain but every single rumour this year has pointed not only to this year's model being much the same as the 6S but to loads of innovations targetted at a future model, such as OLED, in-screen home buttons and so on.
Combined with the fact that the tenth anniversary is next year, only a fool would bet against next year's model being a big change, which by definition will not get an 'S' suffix.
That's the problem they are rumours. Very few actually turn out to be true this far away from the release. We only just started getting some certainty for the 7 within the last month or so.

They absolutely won't, it'll be a £50 adapter.

You got me on the 1/4" jack! Although I do have a few hundred quids worth of in ear headphones and they're obviously 3.5mm.. if I had to buy another pair at £100+ and I had to decide 3.5mm or lightening, I wouldn't be impressed. Yes I could get 3.5mm plus an adaptor but that's just a pure pita and completely ridiculous.
Why create complexity? In my opinion, it's nothing more than a money making ploy and I'm truly amazed that so many people just accept it with the excuse that the phone will be thinner.
I'm currently at the end of a contract, on android, if the iPhone doesn't have a 3.5mm port I will 100% not switch back to iPhone like I've done in the past.

The most expensive lightening to display adapter is currently £40, most are £25-30 and the 3.5mm TTY adapter is £15.
Now I'm not saying it isn't annoying spending a further £15-30 on an adapter for a £600+ phone, but it's hardly the OMGZ £50!!!! you're making it out to be.
The only way for it to truly not be an issue is if you have an adaptor permanently attached to each pair of your headphones, plus a spare in case you need to borrow some headphones.
The only people who shouldn't be bothered about this are those who never use the port anyway or are happy to use a pair of crappy headphones supplied with the phone (which will probably be worse than normal so you buy some overpriced beats).

Well we'll see won't we, maybe a more accurate price could be £35- £40 but I don't think it'll be free or even under £30.
Except it's not the same. Floppy to CD was a standard. 3.5mm is a standard and lightning is Apple's proprietary connector.
I can only agree on removing the 3.5mm port if all manufacturers including Apple convert to USB C

What I find baffling about this is the argument that they need to save space on the inside of the phone. Honestly - why? just make it 2mm thicker and use that space if there's something they desperately need to squeeze in.
I realise one day the standard will move on, but as has been pointed out - this is apple's proprietary connection. If they go through with it then its a classic case of form over function.

They're too busy trying to make big money from cheap tech, or beats headphones
There's been no real smartphone development for years now, most improvements come from the OS
How can you say there has been no real development? The CPU/GPU are insane and the cameras are phenomenal! What do people really constitute real development? Were you expecting a coffee machine on your smartphone by now?
Who said I wanted or expected a coffee machine? I simply made a statement about product development. Just because I think it's slowed right down doesn't mean I believe there should be more.. In relative terms development has slowed, new phones can't do much more than my galaxy note 2 could do from years ago. Look at the lack of hype in this thread, it says it all.
It's no surprise that people keep phones for 2 to 3 years now when they used to want to upgrade every single generation. New generation phoned simply have slightly better processor, camera etc.
The reason a lot of people upgrade to new phones is because that's the only way to get the new OS, or because their old phone on the new OS now lags because it's designed for newer phones or perhaps because it's designed to lag to make you upgrade.
