GPU Recco - after a rethink I've increased Budget to £200

Hello there,

I recently posted regarding advice on what GPUs to get for a budget of £100. I got a few recommendations. The advice was to get second hand. Well, for the past few days I've tried my hand at bay and gum to no avail.

So I'm now thinking I'm better off increasing my budget and getting something new. I don't think I'm ever going to go over 1080p I have two monitors the one used for gaming has a resolution of 1920x1080 the other probably less. I would like to use them both so I guess the card will need to have two DVI outputs. I hope the card I buy will last me at least 3+ years.

I've set my eyes at on a GTX970. I'm clueless about AMD equivalents. I therefore kindly ask if you can pass some suggestions my way? I'm looking to buy over the weekend.

Thanking you in advance.

I would get Amd 470/480 and not 970 or 1060 Memory: 3072MB if you want Nvidia you need to increase your budget to around 240 for the 1060 6144MB, 470/480 matches the 970 in dx11 and will beat it in dx12, for me 1060 Memory: 3072MB is not good as Memory: 3072MB will hamper it if you keep it a while but it about the same in dx11 but more likely slower in dx12 but as i not looked at reviews of this card

the 1060 Memory: 6144MB is faster in dx11 but more likely be slower in dx12 than the 480.

up to £200 get a 470.480 Memory: Memory: 4096MB
up to £240/250 get either 480 Memory: 8192MB or 1060 Memory: 6144MB

Thank you for the advice. I've checked the OC XFX 480 link however it say pre order? I really wanted one as soon as possible! :) Are there specific makes I should go for?

They so sell very well, hence they are almost always in lost stock.

@ £209.99

or else RX470 @ 188.99 and overclock it to 1390

However RX480 is much better purchase.

Yup, the 4GB RX 480 is the card to go for in this price range.

This video gives you a good idea of performance of the cards you will be looking at:

As you can see, there is maybe 3-5fps average difference between the 470 4gb & 480 4gb, but there's atleast a £20 difference in price. So the 470 could be worth considering, depends on if you want to go a bit below budget, or slightly above. You can also see that the GTX 1060 3GB out-performs both in some instances. However, the low amount of VRAM could be a concern for future games. But, if you're only playing at 1080p if might not be too much of an issue.

Thank you all ever so much! I really was clueless - the choice between the RX and GTX 1060 - i'm pretty much stumped. I'm just dismayed at it not being in stock as I would have loved to have been up and running and playing a few AAA titles I have put on hold.

Whatever you do just avoid the GTX1060 3GB - even DF said to spend the extra on the 6GB version and for £30 to £40 more its not that much over two to three years.

4GB of VRAM is the minimum I would consider - you have enthusiast cards like the GTX970,GTX980,etc which have been quite popular,so I can see 3GB to 4GB of VRAM being targetted with GTX970 level performance for games.

Regarding the RX480 4GB - the price increases make it too close to the 8GB version, and again I would probably get that over the 4GB version.

The top end cards from Nvidia have 6GB and 8GB of VRAM,so you can see what is going to happen with more and more games, when they start looking at higher texture and AA settings.

The RX470 4GB Red Devil is meant to overclock quite well(and boost quite decently) so is quite close to the RX480 4GB.

Ideally,I wish it was closer to £180 though.

Not really but it depends how long you keeping it, as games could could go over 4 Gigs a few years down the line and you might have to turn down some setting.

But at the moment not a lot in it 4 or 8Gig
